Actually , that is very fair comment . He signed a new deal , then the current manager gets the sack , a new manager comes in , and will the club get taken over or not ?

I still think he is looking to go for personal gain , but you make a valid point .

Also the fact that we're coming off a poor season in comparison to previously years, to the extent where none of our players apart from VVD (who was out for most of it) and Bertrand have attracted any real interest. The board are also making noises that we're not going to be very active this window, I don't see why an ambitious player would want to hang around when a Champions League club comes calling.

 

I hear what you're saying, but much as like with Lallana, it's not so much the 'why' it's the 'how'.

Are we? I don't really think anyone knows the price we would accept. Liverpool and his agent screwed this up for him more than anything. If they'd kept their gobs shut he might be there already.

 

I'm sure every player would like to leave in a good way. In the vast majority of cases at Saints I would say that the players have enjoyed their time here and are greatful for the opportunity. But if the club puts their foot down and says no then the player has to try and take things into their own hands to force the move

£60-75m for a centre back, not playing for a top club who has also been injured for the last 6 months? I'd say that is pricing him out of a move.

 

Again I'm unsure, his previous agent may have ruined it for him by advising him to sign the new deal last season. I think even if there were no tapping up claims that Saints would've said no because of the length of time on his deal

We have no idea what Liverpool are prepared to pay. They've never said "you're asking for too much, so we're out".

 

The club have said all summer that no key players would be sold, before & after the tapping up stuff. We were holding out for more money than anyone would pay.

 

Why have they not put a firm bid in, and spent their time unsettling Van Dijk if they were happy with the price?

They "withdrew" from negotiations before they even bid. Of course they'll try and knock the price down, but I think your summation that we've "priced him out of a move" is a real leap.

 

You applaud and propose two very different management styles

and display a very cavalier attitude to the family assets if I might say a broken VVD is no good to anyone

 

We priced out City & Chelsea, they've both said as much in the press (through their people). Liverpool have obviously lost a lot of goodwill with our board, but Virgil doesn't want to stay.
