He is decent, no more, no less. Seems a bit weird to me to be giving him an extra year on an already pretty long deal but whatever doesn't really mean much overall. I think we are about his level, can't see any of the top 6 wanting him unless it is to be a backup for HG purposes.
Fraser is a good keeper....not so good last season when he was carrying an injury, the whole team was suffering and we lost our 2 main CBs for half the season....the bastard!
New contracts for Boufal, PEH and Pied coming next. Good to see the club has their priorities in order.
Seems a bit odd. Already under contract until 33 and wasn't he already one of our highest paid players? Oh well, whatever.
I don't know how that affects his ability to make basic saves which he was struggling with last year. And when I say basic, I mean basic for a PL keeper.
We weren't going to sign anyone better and already have competition in McCarthy so might as well give him a contract that will mean we can sell him for more if he has a couple of good seasons. Not much positive but not much negative either.
So Taylor and Forster get new deals, McCarthy next? Just out of interest with some debating on here how good Forster is in regards other keepers in the PL I decided to rank them from best to worst, all imo of course: De Gea Lloris Courtois Cech Butland Begovic Hart Foster Mignolet Schmeichel Heaton Forster Pickford Gomes Ryan Fabianski Hennessey Darlow I left out Man City new keeper Ederson and Huddersfield keeper Lossl as I have never seen either of them play but that would be my list, putting Forster in the average range
Well that's that then. May as well not try. It's not like we have a self proclaimed world class scouting system available to us is it Fwiw, I'd be happy for Mccarthy to get a chance next year.
We would have either had McCarthy, Forster and new keeper taking up high wages or have to get rid of one of them which I don't think is going to happen for a decent fee. If forster regains some form or McCarthy is as decent as most seem to believe then it's a large price for a small upgrade. I'd rather invest in a DM to protect the defence.
Congratulations Fraser. Hope you prove the doubters wrong this season. Ps. Peters Shilton only left his line for a pee at half time and was considered the best in he world.
It's just a pointless extension though. I understand we're not going to replace him and agree there's bigger priorities for funds but that doesn't change the fact that giving him an extra year and a payrise seems completely unnecessary.
That depends. Maybe we had an agreement with him that he had a new contract last year that included some clause about a further rise of he proved fitness from the injury??? I'm just speculating here, but I felt he still carried an injury last season and without knowing the terms of his last offer, it is plausible.
It's plausible and we can all speculate. Though I'd say thats even less likely than my tin foil hat post above. I'm just saying from the facts we have available, and ignoring the argument of whether you rate him or not, there seems to be very little justification in giving him an extra year and a payrise at this point in time.
