Wasn't really in the mood for a full on Grove review earlier but having had a brew and a dump (not together) I am ready.

The young chap playing Spider-Man was likeable enough and this incarnation is much more aligned to the original comics than the Toby McGuire or Andrew Garfield versions. Peter Parker is meant to be a bit of a scrawny, specky awkward teenager in the comics and his life as a crime fighter is in stark contrast to his social ineptitude. They got this aspect right in the new film. McGuire was too old and Garfield was too cocky.

As soon as the love interest turned out to be of ethnicity I thought "here we go again" as the Marvel Universe is trying to appeal to a wider readership and audience with a variety of characters and revising it's origins so that we have a female Thor, a black Captain America and openly poove super heroes. Michael Keaton turns in a decent performance as The Vulture although he's never called such during the film (not that I remember) and the cast of alien weaponry toting side-kicks were a pleasing contrast to mutants or super powered villains. Star of the show was Parker's fat Samoan looking best friend who stole every scene he was in.

Early indications are that the love interest in the next Spider-Man film will also be "of colour" as the girl called Michelle said at the end "people call me MJ" indicating she may be a likely Mary-Jane figure.

Sadly we won't see how the Sony owned Spider-Man franchise plays out and the third Andrew Garfield film explaining what happened to his Ma & Pa won't see the light of day.

I'd say 7 out of 10 is fair for this latest outing.
