Seems that most are head over heels about the lad, which is good, local lad ect ect. I like him, think he's good footballer. But I don't like him as much as some on here, he hasn't actually created one goal or scored one goal for us. I don't think I've really seen him do anything creative, or really done anything to help us out defence wise. My point is, what does he do? Apart from about 5-8 passes in a game? The rest of the game he just goes missing. I know he's young and has time to develop and I think he has the potential. But it seems once a small group like a player on here the rest follow? Surely someone agrees about colback? Because if all you like is a handful of passes in a game and that's it, put me in CM for Sunderland lol, it's dead easy to do what he does. I don't mean it as a negative post, just an opinion on a player.
He tidies up in the middle, retains possession and giveaway it to the lads who do create, hopefully he'll develop further into more of a specialist attacking/defending player given game time.
Ive seen a fair bit of Colback and to be honest im one of those in favour of his recent performances and emergence within the first team. This could obviously be due to the reletively low expectations people had before he entered the team however his composure, range of passing and general calmness when on the ball stand out for me. Its hard to compare him to this player or that and also hard to judge the lad in my opinion when he plays alongside Cattermole (how many goals/assists has Catts made?) as the attacking threat from central midfield is not there (insert Gardner!) He did score in preseason and also from memory was he not player of the year 2years running at Ipswich? Add to that hes a local lad and i always like to see our academy generating our next generation and also saving us some money! For me he will develop into a very good consistent premier league player, nothing spectacular but reliable personified.
I think you are a tad unfair as he is doing pretty much the same job as Cattermole! You may however unearth a point that suggests he and Catts are too similar to play as a midfield 2 which I possible agree with. Either Catts or Colback alongside a more forward thinking midfielder like Gardner could be the way to go, although I can see Bruce's thoughts in going really solid away to Liverpool. For me Colback would get the nod though. Dont think there is much between Catts and Colback and would much rather see the local home grown lad play in that situation.
Too simular???!!! Your being serious right? Lol. Cattermole consistently wins tackles, blocks shots, looks after the defence, intercepts passes. And goes forward with the side too, he is constantly involved throughout the game. How can you seriously write on here that they are too simular lol. Some peoples footballing knowledge on here astounds me.
I dont know much about the lad either, but what did come out of last Saturday was he was targetted by the Liverpool side and got a bit of a kicking without letting it go to his head. They picked him out as a weak link and he wasn't. If he is going to be good he needs the time he is being given in the first 11. With this all said, I don't think he'll start v the skunks. x
To be honest mate, I don't really understand how you didn't see these answers coming. Don't ask a question if you're not going to like the answer. Fact is while Carts is underrated going forward, Colback looks better. Agree that defensively Carts is way ahead though.
it astounds me that some people can attack other SAFC fans for giving an opinion, when they asked the question in the 1st place... .......................... Colback is one of those quiet players that just gets a job done without calling attention to themselves. Cattermole has the more "visible" style of the 2. Catts is definately the Defensive midfielder while Colback has better vision and, as he continues to mature and improve, will become a better all round player imo. Gardner is an all out attacking midfielder, Catermole is all out defensive player and colback fits somewhere in the middle - probably similar to Vaughn.
Agree totally with this. Nothing wrong with a bit of healthy discussion and debate but considerin startin a thread knowing that maybe the majority have differing opinions to your own and then not being happy when those opinions are voiced is a bit off. Just wait till this weekend mate when he scores a 30yard worldy against the mags and wins u over, fingers xd!!!
Apologies John for having the audacity to express an opinion within a forum!! It's not as if I forced it upon you and told you I thought you were wrong! I have watched Colback more than most over the years having been a regular watching the reserves in his early days with the club and believe he is a very similar player to Cattermole. Colback regularly sat deep in midfield and although at a lower level than he is at now proved he could no doubt handle himself. Maybe his better awareness than Catts means he doesnt have to keep throwing himself in the way of shots!! Also Ipswich regularly had him at left back so he certainly knows how to defend. He is the future of our club in my opinion. I will trust Bruce's feelings on the lad over yours.
no problem with colback like disco says he cleans up in midfield and gets stuck in i feel he will have a big role to play this season and bruce will use him as and when required infact i dont think any ones place is safe at the moment we have good squad players waiting in the wings bruce will pick his team on the day and we can all expect some suprises .
Didn't he get a few goals for Ipswich? I'm thinking he'll turn out to be a Craig Gardner style player. Battling with a good shot on him.
So on the basis we have Gardener - let`s play him...never been 100% about Colback and not sure why - probably simply not seen enough of him but seems a bit light weight to me
I want Gardner in on Saturday no questions. Whether that be in place of Elmo or Colback I am not too fussed.
Colback's passing is very good, he has a good range of passing. Cattermole wins the ball back, but his passing is poor, he often loses it. Colback doesn't really lose the ball and it helps us going forward. The fact that you're insulting other peoples football intelligence is stupid as you can clearly not appreciate the job that Colback does. Not forgetting he's only going to get better. Don't tell any mags, but Colback was born in Newcastle and grew up supporting the unwashed. Shhhhhh
Don't think that's true bud, he was raised in Cramlington but red and white thru and thru. I was talking to a footballing pal of his at a wedding. This chap is now at Blyth.... Does this make me an itk?
