Liverpool are “close” to completing a deal for chief summer target Virgil van Dijk – and are ready to “push the boat out” to strengthen their squad. Former Reds midfielder and now media pundit Danny Murphy has made the claim with speculation still swirling around the Holland international. Liverpool moved to distance themselves from van Dijk earlier this summer when issuing a public apology to his club Southampton. However, it's understood the player has expressed his desire for a move to Anfield, prompting Murphy to declare the transfer could soon be in the offing. Emre Can has agreed to a new contract at Liverpool and is expected to put pen to paper on his return from the Confederations Cup. The German’s representatives have been in dialogue with the club’s hierarchy for over a year now, but it seems a compromise has finally been reached. Italian Champions Juventus have been linked with Emre Can for a number of months now, and are said to have been monitoring a range of midfielders this summer including Sevilla’s Steven N’Zonzi and PSG’s Blaise Matuidi
