I agree with your last sentence, not the rest. A loan signing could be marquee but Toby wasn't. I certainly don't think "well regarded" constitutes a marquee signing. Far from it. I wasn't shocked by those signings. Just to wind back... I responded to a list of players when I was told that we always make a marquee signing. I said most of those players weren't. You have focused on one. To get back to that original discussion, do you think that they were all marquee signings and that we always make a marquee signing?
There is no official definition of a marquee signing....marquees can vary from a pop up tent to a huge gazebo. What constitutes such a player depends on the team concerned and the size of that team. In League 1, Rickie was a marquee signing for us....in the EPL, with so much competition, I doubt we will sign a marquee player in the near future. The player has to be almost too big for us...unlikely to happen now. We are signing players just about right for us. Pretty pointless however to try and define such a thing...I think we will sign players that interest and intrigue us....but I don't expect any player to make me jump up and down with excitement.
Biggest marquee signing we've ever had was Keegan. Anything that tops the absolute flabbergastness (I know it's not a real word) of the press at that time would be amazing

It's a lot worse; so bad l cannot bring myself to watch a second time to remind myself if it's that bad...
He wanted to go for gametime though, I'm sure we would have kept him otherwise as he was a useful 3rd choice behind Morgan and Victor.
You may not believe this but I actually predicted that he was the big signing. If I remember rightly there was an announcement that Saints were going to make a big reveal of a new player - this was years before the internet and the increased hype we get now - and I told my Dad that Saints were going to sign Keegan. He laughed but then looked on in amazement when it turned out that I was right. Never had such a premonition since...
I was working as a draughtsman in Eastleigh and a work colleague (Saints Fan too) got a call from his sister who at the time as a temp admin position at The Dell and ironically hated football; she phoned her brother late that morning to say there was a rumour that Saints had signed Keegan. We both laughed; only 4 hours later to find out it was true.
Everton will have to pay in the region of £50m if they are to tempt Swansea’s talismanic midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson away from the Liberty Stadium. Swansea are yet to receive any official approaches from Everton and are known to be frustrated by reports that the Merseyside club is about to launch a second bid of £35m. (Sky)
I wish! Would love a top-class Welsh player in the Saints team (ready for all the comments that apart from Bale - and Ramsey - there aren't any top-class Welsh players )
