Wouldn't call Toby unsuccessful at Atletico; he just found himself behind two veteran stalwarts, and with the team chasing a title (which they won) Simeone wasn't doing a tonne of rotating. Was still good when he played, though, but he didn't want to spend another year as third choice...something Atletico probably regrets, because Godin/Miranda were already very old.
Have to say I completely agree. Oriol is superb but he cannot do it on his own. I think we will sign another attacking player, whether that is Karamoh I'm not sure.
So.... he went there not wanting to be third choice but was third choice. I'd say that was personally unsuccessful for him. You're splitting hairs here Schad. You get my point. He was not a marquee signing. In fact he was a loan signing.
He was a marquee signing and a loan signing. He was one of the most highly-regarded young CBs in football, but Simeone wasn't willing to break up his veteran CB pairing.. That's not splitting hairs; it's verifiable fact. Toby wanted a guarantee that he'd be a starter, and Simeone couldn't, so off on loan he went. If memory serves, we beat out other teams because they wanted to buy him outright, while we were willing to agree to a loan (with an incredibly convoluted purchase structure).
Tbf, We lost alot of Solid players that Summer, Lovren was a very good player for us. Alderweield was considered a massive coup all be it on loan, Prob aside from Bertrand must of gave the team a massive lift. So i would say he was pretty Marquee. It got me mega excited knowing he was wearing the shirt.
Good question. I think it would have to be someone who had already been very successful at a good level and somebody signed for a fee out of the ordinary for our club. I don't mean record fee as we'll continue to break that record fee as more money comes in. Someone beyond our normal expectation.
Realistically where can Barkley go? I think possibly only West Ham, maybe Leicester would be interested?
So you don't think that a loan signing could be considered a marquee signing even if the player was well regarded at a decent level over a good period of time? I think a marquee signing is a player that the squad as a whole would take notice of, and a player that they would want to learn from and lead us. Also someone who shocks and surprises media alike.
I think their board will be expecting them to nudge the top four. Not break it, but make them uncomfortable.
