Showing my age - my first single "Paperback Writer" and first album "Abbey Road" - 6 and 8 for the first and 17 and 6 for the second :emoticon-0102-bigsm
However, I'm most proud of my second album - Layla by Derek and the Dominos (after hearing it at a little record shop in kings lynn) - bought it via Virgin mail order ...... still one of my favourite albums, but had to persuade some of my mates as to how good it was ...... :emoticon-0103-cool:

All great stuff, Dave. Is Clapton's awful [OK, different] version of Little Wing on that album.?

OK, first single was Bridget the Midget [I kid you not] in a mad moment. Then after Hot Love, I stopped buying singles at all. First album I had bought was Deep Purple, Fireball. I played it to my blues musician cousin, and when Ian Gillan said, 'heh, what do you think of that.?' after Anyone's Daughter, he said, not much. The bastard then played me Led Zeppelin I, and the priority was set. Deep Purple were gone. I then played him my second album which was In Search of The Lost Chord, by The Moody Blues, and that really threw him a curved ball. Once I'd played him To Our Children's Children's Children [my third ever album] I think he was a changed man. Abbey Road and Pet Sounds were sitting in the wings as backup. A year or two later I was to blow him away with Surf's Up and Fragile [Yes] :)

Ah yes, actually that version (whilst not a touch on Jimi's, but better than Sting's and The Coors .....) is made good by Duane Allman's magnificent slide work.
I had Deep Purple in Rock (didn't we all?), but LZ2 and then LZ1 blew that away. I loved "In Search of the Lost Chord" - the Moody's made some cracking albums. Then (like you) I discovered Yes, Crimson and Barclay James Harvest ......
Took me a while to realise that the Beach Boys weren't just "surf" sounds ......

Blimey, we almost have the same history. Substitute Barclay James Harvest for CSN&Y and we're there. I also didn't think the Beach Boys were anymore than surfers and then my next older brother played me Pet Sounds and I went WHAAAAAT.? I remember we had I Get Around as a single in the home, and the B-side was Don't Worry Baby, which I much preferred. It was a precursor of what was to come from them.

And yes, I also had the Deep Purple album featuring them carved at Mount Rushmore. LZII I listened to while my brother was out one night, as it was his album. I played Side Two first [Heartbreaker onwards]. A tradition I keep to, to this day. It sounds odd to me if I play it the correct way round. :)

Tbf, I could listen to those classic 7 Moody Blues albums almost anytime and at least one of them would set me off. Usually that would be the key to play the other 6 in various order. Bad timing if one starts to play them late in the evening.

I knew of CSN through "Marrakesh Express", but then I heard "Deja Vu" and realised they were more than just a harmony group ...... I already knew Neil (After the Goldrush), so I was definitely into them.
So many great groups around that time - Colosseum Live (Lost Angeles anyone?), Court of the Crimson King, Nursery Cryme, Yessongs and Fragile ...... blimey :emoticon-0103-cool:

Let's face it Dave, we were literally bombarded with quality rock music back then. I have gone back to 1960's -70's rock music several times to pick up on what I entirely missed and there was loads of it. For example, I sort of discovered Frank Zappa about 20 years ago and he'd already been dead several years before.

True story, someone played me Nick Drake's first album way back then, and I went 'yeah, pretty good, but no great shakes'. Nowadays, Five Leaves Left is a bloody classic [and I do really like it]. Just shows what originality and quality was going on back then.

People have asked me what era they could go back and listen to and not feel like it is outdated. The thing, as Godders might say, with his 1930's acoustic blues music, if it is entirely new to you, then it is 'new music'. It it sounds dated, rather than interesting, then perhaps one needs to move forward into another era. Mind you, nobody says, 'ooh, that Mozart chappie is so dated'. :)

I talk to the wind... ;)

During the 1980's I'd felt there was nowhere the richness of music that I'd grown up with. I couldn't just keep listening to XTC, a bit of Simple Minds, Talking Heads, even early U2, etc.. this was way before the time I decided to go back to the past for new music because it was simply a fairly hard thing to do. So I decided to buy albums I'd heard from the artists of the day even though they weren't blowing my head off. So I bought that Men At Work album, featuring 'Down Under', which always comes up in rock music quizzes and nobody gets the answer right [well, almost nobody ;)], and a host of other albums just to find a direction. Inevitably, I started going a little more State side, and amazingly came up with Toto. Indeed, the album Toto IV, which features Rosanna:

Which in all honesty is pretty clever music. They were superb session musicians, before they became a band, but I'll probably look back on this inclusion in a few days and wonder what the hell I put it up here for. Hey, you can always go to Youtube afterwards and enjoy Africa. ;)

And my pop music guilty pleasure or all pop music guilty pleasures is My Sharona. There's a big part of me that hates this. It panders. It is a piece of music that just says 'this will sell'. And it did, in shed loads. I'm not sure that The Knack ever made it so big afterwards. Probably because they'd blown all their creativity in one song. Forgive me if I've insulted their illustrious memory. All I can say is, this is absolutely fantastic, four piece, guitar based, R&B pop music at the end of the Punk Music era and paying zero heed to it. Nothing more need be said:

I've always loved that guitar break in the middle. One of pop's hidden gems.

As King Crimson have been mentioned it's probably worth throwing Steven Wilson into the fold. I believe he worked with Fripp on the KC remixes. Pictures of a City from WOTP is probably my favourite song incidentally.

Not sure how to upload so hopefully pasting a link works but this is one of the highlights from (in my opinion) his best album, The Raven that Refused to Sing. The outro guitar is fantastic and the lyrics of the song emotional but worth the time to listen.

Blimey, that is instantly likeable. ^^

Oh my goodness, that's progressive rock, or I'm a spanner.

Thanks for that Jos. Nice video which is entirely not needed as the music stands up.

Glad you like it. The short picked clean guitar before the solo always reminds me of the Greg Lake song C'est La Vie too, probably not accidentally.

Excellent song and album. Sound of Muzak is my favourite on that, especially having seen it live. The time signature on it is crazy.

I'm enjoying lots of the ideas on this thread, some good music being posted.

Not a huge fan of comparing bands to others but thought I'd be a hypocrite and post a song from Karnivool, a mix of Tool and Porcupine Tree.

That's not bad, though maybe a little more Tool leaning than I'd normally listen too. The end of the first verse caught me off guard as I was waiting for a heavy crunch to kick in but it didn't, just stayed with the palm muted picking.

Reminded me of this advert that was played all the time for a while... not heard the song in a long time though.
