Jeez, I wish you pepys wouldn't admit to how you can't link when I spent hours in an earlier life explaining it for you in our guide on how to use the forum editor and other skills. It really saddens me that I entirely wasted my time. Sad story. The one below, I mean.

The link. And btw, it was ****ing easy and I wasn't being a nerd while I did it on my phone, OK.? : http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/40446713

Thanks for posting the link. I'm sure it was easy to do and that I could have done it myself but sometimes people are unsure in how to do things. Apologies for any stress or inconvenience caused.

I have had brief periods of depression (which is like saying that I have a mild headache to someone with a brain tumour), but knowing what mild symptoms feel like gives me a small understanding of his suffering. I feel so deeply for anyone with mental problems....at least with physical disabilities, the real you is still there. I wish him all the best.

Depression comes in many degrees, none of which should be dismissed. It is good that the curtains are slowly being drawn back on this dangerous 'condition' although still not quickly enough. For too many years and has not been considered properly and has been frowned upon. I'm not just talking football, but any person in any walk of life.

Absolutely. I've had my own black dog for most of my life. I can kennel the bugger usually, but every now and then it demands exercise. People have two reactions. One is to ask what prompts it. To which the only sane answer is "I don't ****ing well know, get it?" (but of course I don't say this). The second is "What have you got to be depressed about?". This is a killer, as objectively I have nowt to be depressed about and so the self-loathing that goes with depression is exacerbated by feeling like a self-indulgent twat.

By the way, my hound is currently muzzled and sleeping!

I think the biggest problem is that people think of being depressed as just being a bit more sad than normal which is why comments like, "cheer up," would - rightly - cause even more upset and offense. It is slowly improving and having celebrities and the younger members of the Royal family speaking out openly about mental health issues can only be a good thing.

That's right, Helen. You know the old adage. Smile, things could be worse. So I smiled and sure enough things got worse!

I find the other thing people don't get, is that I don't withdraw from social contact. I'd like to, but somewhere there is an ear worm telling me that I have to go to whatever and I have to be nice to people. The effect of this is total exhaustion on my part and others saying "he seemed all right when I saw him at .." to my long -suffering wife.

Even as an old dyed-in-the-wool republican, I am delighted that the two princes have "come out" as they have. Particularly Harry who is so clearly a pretty hard bloke and hasn't minced words about his feelings.

Lambo the social contact part is so true. If you are, like me, a natural extrovert and someone who is always the centre of the room (as though to speak), yet you've got a little dark tunnel, people Don't always see that. I remember having told a previous boss that I was really not enjoying my job and that it was getting me down heavily, when a week later he saw me centre of the room, leading the social charge at a work event. He said, "everything good again now then, eh" in a rhetorical way. My response was a little short. Sometimes you just perform how you've always performed and mask what's maybe going on behind the scenes. People can be shocked when things aren't what they seem. One doesn't have to be quiet and crying to be suffering some form of depression.

Germany leading the Confed cup with a team of kids (average age 24). Even if they don't go on to win it, that's a sign of even more success for Germany in the future. Can England ever catch up?

Great win for Germany. Men against boys but boys took it.

That's exactly it, Fats. I think we all have that little black dog somewhere inside us and sometimes, as Lambo says it so well, it has to be let free and exercised. I'm a pretty extroverted type too and I give the impression of being a "centre of the room" kind of guy too, but occasionally, things get too much and the worst thing you can be told is "Cheer up" or "That's not like you". It takes a special kind of friend to understand and support, whilst you climb out of it. I'm extremely lucky that I have a few of those. Unhappily, some people don't and spiral down - thankfully, as you say, more is understood now and you don't have to "Man up and be positive".

Next time that dog appears, perhaps I should take you back to where you are now and I can support you by revisits to those distilleries.... :)

It's funny. I'm beginning to read comments like VARs is a shambles or VARs is all over the place.

It's not VARs which is the problem. It's officials not being consistent and doing the right thing. Mind you, this is a test period. If you want things to go wrong then they ought to be doing it now, not after it becomes officially adopted. Then again, this video aid has humans doing the interpretation. That's what's so powerful about goalline technology. There is no human interpretation and hence no room for **** ups. Once FIFA set a minimum standard of performance for officials, when dealing with VARs incidents, we'll begin to get better consistency and interpretation, and see this stuff peter out.
