    • safc.com caught up with Duncan Watmore on Monday as the forward continues his recovery from a knee injury.

The 23-year-old has missed the last six months but he’s making progress and is currently away with his team-mates in Austria, with his fitness improving every day.

Check out the Q&A below as Watmore talks fitness, eyes a return to action and reveals the impact made by Simon Grayson and his backroom team.

Duncan, after a spell on the sidelines you’re back in and amongst it with your team-mates which must be great?

DW: “Definitely – it’s nice to be with the lads again because you spend a lot of time in the gym and with the physios, so It’s really nice to be back in and amongst it and I’m really enjoying it.”

I know you’re still training on your own and working on your recovery, but just how much of a boost was it to make the trip?

DW: “You want to be with the lads as much as possible because when you are you feel much more included. It’s been a long time which is frustrating but I’m back now and looking forward to getting back playing.”

You had a terrific end to the 2015-16 season before cementing your place in the team last year, so it must have been a bitter blow to suffer a first long-term injury – and hopefully the last – when you did?

DW: “I hope it’s the last too! Injuries never come at a good time but I think it was particularly frustrating because I had cemented my place in the first team. I have to make sure I keep working hard throughout my rehab and continue that when I come back to make sure I’m in the squad.”

How much did it help to have Paddy around?

DW: “It helped a lot. You never wish injury on anyone but we’ve both said that having each other throughout our recovery has really helped kick us on and motivate us. Binners – our head physio – has been brilliant and he’s been with us every step of the way, and now I’m with Scotty running so I’m very lucky to have had great people helping me.”

I saw you doing some work on the ball earlier – it was still very light at this stage but it must feel like a huge step in the right direction?

DW: “It’s really nice to be kicking a ball again and it does feel like a real progression – hopefully my touch hasn’t got any worse! Being back on the ball is a real reward after working hard in the gym in the last few months.”

You haven’t trained with the new manager yet but it seems like he’s had a really positive effect on the team?

DW: “From what the lads have said they’re all loving it. It looks really intense and there’s a lot of competitiveness and a desire to work hard, and the manager seems to have really taken to the lads and they’ve taken to him. You can see the positivity.”

The opening Sky Bet Championship game against Derby County will come a little too early for you, but it must be great to see everyone raring to go and hungry to impress?

DW: “Unfortunately it will come too soon for me but the lads are fully focussed on making sure the season ahead is a positive one. There’s a real buzz around the place at the moment and hopefully we can take that into the campaign.”

And you mention that ‘buzz’, how much credit do the manager and his backroom team deserve for establishing that so quickly?

DW: “They deserve a lot of credit because they’ve been great. Like I said the lads have been really impressed by them – as have I – and I think there’s a really good feeling around the place right now. Pre-season is hard but everyone is really looking forward to playing some games.
