What amazes me too are his Pens. Even if the keeper goes the right way there is no stopping them. My username used to be about MLT, but it's fair to say Matt & Rickie share my username now.
Isn't that because we all thought he'd find a level which would be maybe "not bad in the Championship"? Let's face it we saw him as a bit of a jobbing centre foward bought to get out of us League 1 and then sold to Gillingham or the like. That he'd ever play for England and Liverpool was beyond anyone's wildest dreams. I remember coming back from the JPT final and a bloke rang in to 606 to say Rickie should play for England. The bus I was on burst into hysterical laughter. He could cut it against Carlisle, we said, but imagine him playing against Chelsea. Well he did. And he scored. And we began to realise he was a bit special. When he went to Liverpool, I told my Red mates that they were buying a footballer, not just a striker. I loved watching Rickie in the Prem. A thinking player. Sadly, LFC didn't get that.
Boring boring Beefy! So anyone heard anything? Saints to bring Matt Oakley out of retirement? Come on, this is desperate. Other clubs are buying up players all over the place , and we tell the world we've signed 3 when 2 of them are already here. Hardly needed a black box to find them. Come back, CBK, all is forgiven. FFS, where's the gin?
I think it took about a game or two for me to realise that he was much more than that. It was a few days or weeks after his transfer that I looked up his history and the few comments [there were not many back then] that had been made about him by previous managers who had played him in midfield and attack. They had all said that he had something way above the average. That he had vision, that he could pass and he certainly knew where the goal was. All he seemed to lack was a commitment to himself and football. At Saints we drilled a professionalism into him that he'd not committed to before. I think he knew this was his real chance. He just got better and better. My only slight regret with Rickie is that we didn't get him earlier in his career because I believe he could have got even better than he peaked with us. Then again, maybe the timing was just right for him and Saints.
Didn't you read Les.? We're not signing anyone just to get people excited. You'd better find that gin.
