He is a smashing bloke who proved far too nice to be a good manager, but had/has a good reputation as a coach..You could do far worse...

 

Remember saying that about Hughton when he was caretaker for Kinnear. By the time he left he'd proved us wrong, but yes that's what my Sunderland supporting friends said at the time, and that was my personal impression of the guy.

 

The "Hot streak" was a 4-0 win at home to bottom of the table WBA then an away win at Hull 4-2 If my memory serves me right...he then got made full time manager (I hate to see caretaker managers get the job full time like...) and we drew 0-0 with stoke or someone in a bore draw and it was all down hill from then on.....

 

I thought you were 9th in March or something like that, having been in the relegation zone when Keane left.

 

No mate...we only stayed up on the last game of the season....think it was the year erm....you's went down...

 

I know that, but pretty sure you were pretty high and stayed up on the last day, Hull were the same.

 

Every single Sunland fan will tell you this mate...great coach but not a very good manager.

 

Sounds like your version of Hughton. If he adds something we need to the coaching/scouting network then sign him up.

Don't dispute it for a second, what I was disputing was that it was a good run for 2 games, I can genuinely remember thinking you had an outside chance of Europe.

 

I couldn't give a toss if he was once manager of Satan's XI.

If he's a good coach, and if we are in the market for one, **** the begrudgers and sign him up!

 

As has been said, average manager, top class coach. Was an absolute favourite with the players, I remember when he was caretaker for us in a 4-0 win over West Brom, and in the post match interview Bardo and a few other behind him were shouting into the camera "Give him the job!".

SO like I say, having him as an assistant or coach could be great for Newcastle, as he clearly is a popular figure to have around, I see him as being more personable than Pardew, and players would probably have an easier time chatting to him one on one.

IIRC he also was assistant manager in Bolton's best years under Big Sam, when they played a bit of European footy.

 

At last Ashley is showing some compassion, his adoption of Martin Johnson's and Lou Ferringo's lovechild will go down well with the fans.
