Yeh doesn't look as bad, all comes back to intent I suppose and if you can or need to prove it. I can't think of another example really to try and compare or debate?

Ha! I never cared for Piquet either!
But I fail to see the relevance of nationality in any of this.

Lest there be doubt though, my opinion has nothing whatever to do with nationality. (I notice you, Smithers, also mentioned "German" in an earlier post when stating the reasoning behind your opinion of the Vettel swing);) Is it a joke, or are you suggesting that some expressed opinions have been based upon nationality?

Now, I wasn't going to bother mentioning this because in the grand scheme of things, it really is a minor detail; but since I'm here now, I may as well.
You've made a description of events, and for this reason we should be accurate.

    You said,
"… However, I do think there is an argument for a harsher punishment and here's why. The initial contact was accidental (I will come to this later) and his reaction - probably a combination of embarrassment and frustration - was to vent. In doing so he took two hands off the wheel and then flicked the car alongside. He corrects the turning input with his left hand whilst gesticulating with the right hand and looking at Lewis. In the process of the acceleration he hadn't corrrcted the steering input which results in contact. This is different to deliberately putting a direct input in. …"

When Vettel swerved into Hamilton, his left hand was still raised and
his right hand made the steering input. The timing of events coincides with his own description of the incident where he explains that he deliberately drove alongside to express his frustrations at Hamilton. This is when, for whatever reason, he chose to swerve with his right hand still holding the steering wheel. It is a deliberate input (obviously a car – by this time travelling in a near straight line after having drawn alongside and after the initial collision – does not then steer itself so suddenly that Hamilton had no indication that it was going to happen, and then straighten itself up again and continue to be accurately steered around the remainder of the circuit and safely back down the pit-lane to a trusty pit-crew); and whilst the on-board footage only shows the raised (left) arm and hand, his right hand and steering wheel is out of view, the head on footage clearly shows his right hand was on the steering wheel when the swerve occurs. This is the only means of steering. (In an F1 car, it is impossible to steer with one's knees because they are a long way forward of the steering wheel and legs are horizontal). Please have a close look at the footage and you'll see his left hand is still up in the air when the swerve occurs.

Yeah, a minor detail. But if we're going to describe events as at least part of the reasoning behind forming a conclusion, we should describe them objectively and accurately. There is no way that car steered itself and no question that Vettel intentionally moved suddenly (some might say with justification, "violently") to his right and in the direction of Hamilton, who – as you say – he was looking at! Vettel does not even dispute this himself!

    :)

Here's a reminder for all, courtesy of BLS
Watch Vettel's hands in each clip. After drawing alongside and almost completely straightening up (best seen from the footage shot from behind the incident), the swerve is made with his right hand on the wheel.

You win Cosi, I give up. Apologies for having any differing view to yours. You jumped on my first post immediately even when I wasn't posting an opinion just the factual rules around the safety car in response to a question raised by another user. I couldn't have been more neutral on the issue if I tried.

You are 100% right - burn him at the stake, ban him for life..... What do you want? Do we all have to agree with you word verbatim? I will edit the left hand right hand error that you kindly pointed out whilst ignoring the principle point I was making, or trying. Long live the Fuking King!

    • I acknowledged it was a minor point.
    • I apologised for misreading a previous post of yours, to which you responded words to the effect of "no need mate…".
    • I see no reason for your sarcasm.
    • You chose to describe events as part of the justification behind forming your opinion.
    • I thought it only right that we endeavour to be accurate.
    • Of course you do not have to agree with me.

I think the right hand movement was more in sympathy to his left hand gesticulating than done on purpose, but it doesn't take away from the fact he shouldn't have been alongside anyway. I'm with bhaji, shouldn't have happened, but I'm glad it did. The mind games have started, and so far the winner is Liberty Media.

Yes, Liberty Media and the viewers – especially the non-partisan fan – who may now be galvanised into a more intense interest, are the real winners in this.

I could not agree more that for the first time in years, there is really something to get one's teeth into: a passionate rivalry not seen since the early nineties. On the large scale, this has to be good for motor sport, so long as would-be future drivers do not see certain standards drop into the gutter as has happened with football, worldwide.

That was only a rivaly because Hill had a much better car. Ability wise Schumacher was on another lever to Hill.

Be in no doubt: EMSC will agree with you! That said, maybe you might like to investigate the 1994 Benetton for the advantages Briattore's team held with regard to its car's legality?

Sport is war, nearly everyone cheats at some point in all levels of it, regardless of the sport or competition level. The more tightly knit the group and smaller the margin, the worse it is. A never ending natural urge for supremacy.

It really winds me up when Hill doesn't get the credit he deserves. He proved he could keep up with Prost, He took over as Team leader of Williams after the tragic loss of Senna in a car that wasn't nearly as hot as it's predecessors and should have won the title in his 2nd season at the age some drivers are in the twilight of their careers. By rights he should have won the 1997 Hungarian Grand Prix in an Arrows, won the first race for Jordan and Newey sung his praises, yet people still doubt his ability as a racer.

He might not have the record of Senna or a Schumacher, but he was still bloody good!

Hahaha, Well you know that I don't agree with you on this point, I agree with you on quite a lot of things but not this point.

Anyway, it's all done and dusted, I don't think anything else will happen. Hamilton has got away with playing games with the safety car, yet again, and Vettel was punished during the race. Let the dust settle and let them race hard now for the rest of the season.

This basically sums it all up for me.

Maybe if you looked at the FACTS and took away the blinkers you have for Hamilton, you'd accept that he did nothing wrong and wasn't playing games with the SC as proved by him, as agreed by the stewards.

If he had caused an avoidable accident by brake testing Vettel, I am sure the stewards would give him a grid penalty for the next race based on that information which would only have become clear after the race.

However, he didn't brake test, so I'll let you carry on living in the parallel universe that you do.

OK Benson calm down. I still believe that Hamilton was playing games under the safer car. He has a lot of form doing it.

In fact I'm not the only one who thinks that, Bernie Ecclestone has come out and said the same thing.

    http://en.f1i.com/news/271848-ecclestone-hamilton-tried-put-vettel-trouble.html

Jacques Villeneuve has also said the same thing.

    http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/130410/villeneuve-defends-vettel-over-ugly-clash

I do like some of the quote from Jacques ( don't get angrey at me, these aren't my quotes)

"Of course it was ugly, but ultimately Lewis brake-tested him"

"What's the big issue? It's great TV, it's good to see that they're on it, much nicer than Lewis asking [Valtteri] Bottas to slow Vettel down. That was embarrassing."
