Perhaps we just aren't foolish with money because we believe in our ability to improve players....we'd rather not pay an extra 10 million for a 5% better player.

    Yep, I'm going with that.<laugh>

Not sure you can say Benteke has justified his price tag.

Yeah on one player, and the rest of their squad is pretty average because of it. I'd be worried if we spent £30 million on a player, especially if we have gaps to fill in the squad.

On the other hand, spending £30 million on one player, plus 2 or 3 others at £5 - £15 million each still wouldn't make too big a hole in the £100 million we could get for Virgil and Ryan.

Yes, But £100Million doesn't get you a lot when you Add wages of the player for the contract length, Signing on Fee, Agent Fee. etc. So a £30mill player could easily go up to a £45Million player.

We will offset wages against those we won't be paying Van Dijk and Bertrand. Don't get me wrong, I don't expect us to spend £100 million, or anywhere near. Just that we are in a position to do just that.

Benteke scored 15 league goals last year, which isn't a bad return even though he did cost £30m. Plus I thought he finished the season well and was starting to show that he could prove to be a decent investment for them. Plus Palace were only five points behind us last season which could suggest we aren't much above 'pretty average' ourselves.

Plus the fact they'd have probably gone down without him.

I think the long term sustainability, money wise will mean that Saints probably plan in the wages of the actually fee we get for our players. But offsetting current wages with the new would preferable for me. I just don't think that is how Saints work, unless you know otherwise.

Exactly the point I was making.
Call it a hunch but I'll stick my neck out and say Saints won't spend £30 million on one player,as I say it's only a hunch

I think you are being a bit optimistic, we will have a full blown meltdown from this Thursday. Everything will be wrong, wrong ,wrong, wrong. Blue writing.

30 mill for one Benteke or 2 and a bit bit Shane Longs, I'd go for one Benteke.

One Benteke or 7 and a bit Charlie Austins I'd go for all the Charlies every time.

one Benteke or two Gabbiadini's, definately two Gabbiadini's.

Basically we do ok without pending 30 mill so far.

We have started to be linked to a couple of left backs, which more than likely means we are preparing for the exit of Bertrand.

According to the BBC Sports website, Swansea are asking £40m for Siggers....I really rate him but that much? Really?

Rather one benteke than 7 Charlie Austins sat on 7 different treatment tables.

Well yes, because they don't want to sell him. It's exactly what we've done with VvD.

I do agree that both clubs are doing the same thing.

Although I'd say VVD is worth £70m. Due to him being way better then Gylfi. As well as the fact that being a few years younger and playing at CB he could have another 10 years at the very top level. Sigurdson however will probably peak in a few seasons time.
