Klinsmann, the former Tottenham striker, has been out of work for seven months after leaving his post with the American national side.

Sunderland supremo Short is holding out for £85m for the club which finished rock bottom of the Premier League last season.

An American investor team are willing to come in if the German takeover group falls through.

Don't rate him personally, it'd be short sighted of the German overlords to hire somebody because of their nationality.

What Klinsman appointment will guarantee is SAFC will be a headline club, we will a have genuine high profile figure that would attract players the likes of Grayson would never be able to. I wouldn't; be against Klinsman at all infact would welcome it. But please God....don;t let him consider Dozy Altidore..who he seems to rate highly

Klinsman is a bit of a Keano type promotion for me.

A name, a face, a reputation and a presence that we haven't had for about 84 years. I'd take him. I don't know how he'd do in the premier league but he'd get players that otherwise wouldn't come to the championship.

That said... I have a bad feeling about it. Don't see it happening.

Agreed on the first bit - reputation will attract players, just as Keane did.

Might also galvanise the club like Keane did.

I'm clutching at straws here, obviously.

Even McLaren/Carver might turn us down, hopefully.

I get that it would be good to have a high profile name at the club to help restore our status but unless the new owners are going to be gifting a transfer pot of 200 mil then I don't see why it would be much use to us at the moment.

We need a good manager first and sexy players second, just decent players will do us for now. Klinsmann has done nothing as a manager to suggest he'd be good for us.

@flandersmackem yeah at the moment nobody worthwhile is interested but after the change of ownership I think we'll have a lot more to choose from than Grayson.

Temp manager like Stockdale then hold fresh interviews later on for me.

I cannot think of a manager with a track record who we could attract. I cannot think of a high profile manager who we could attract. Would Klinsmann come here ? If he does he would attract players.
I've a feeling it'll be an obscure name we appoint. Stockdale as a caretaker could be Shakespeare(n) here ! Whatever we do needs to be quick and right

Rightly or wrongly I'm looking at it two ways, firstly that before we're sold absolutely nobody decent including Klinsmann will take the job, that much is apparent. Secondly that afterwards it'll be a fresh start with all the positives that come from managing Sunderland but without the current messed up finances, in which case I think we'll be able to get someone better than Klinsmann.

Not been convinced by him personally but never looked that closely into how he operates. I'm open to see what happens.

I don't care about that. I don't want headline players. I want a squad of understated grafters. Who value the game more than the lifestyle. According to Stephen Elliot when when we go promoted under Keane he scrapped chasing those scrapers for headline players like Diouf and Chimbonda and together they tore the heart out of the place and undid all the unity in the club.

Saying that I think you're miles off with what the new owners want. There won't be the headline or statement signings. They're going to run the club on a tight budget chasing German youngsters with the right attitude. So the big question for me is can Klinsman deliver that or is he going to fight the owners plans and demand expensive players? If he doesn't subscribe I think we'll end up skipping on him anyway.

Thats the key we need a manager who gets Sunderland and wants to be here. Not sure if that's Klinsmann but he would have instant status here if he were successful too feed his ego. But with the spamiad on the dark side he may be tempted by increased profile of NE :emoticon-0112-wonde we may even be a city of culture <doh>

I threw his name out there weeks ago when German takeover was mentioned.

Think he'd bring the same aura Keane did

He sounds alright. It's easy to imagine them going for a German manager but I hope they go for the best man for the job not just the best German man.
