He's got a stack of civil servants behind him who know the rulebook. Against the likes of Junckers and Verhofstadt, you need a tough s.o.b. fronting our team. Being nice to them and hoping they will be nice back won't work and they'd screw us

Obviously not but I know it's complex enough to require a PHD in the subject and our supposed main man was making primary school errors a year ago.

I don't want him to be nice. I want him to know what he's talking about.

We've got a Canadian BOE governor and our government is dancing to the tune of some Irish terrorist-sympathisers. Neither of which particularly bother me but the point is who really cares what nationality someone is? Surely it's more important they're the best person available.

By Irish terrorist sympathisers, I assume you're referring to Corbyn and Mcdonnell

Ignorance shouldn't be confused with patriotism.

It's a great country sometimes but I have no more in common with a bloke from Aberdeen or Hartlepool than I do a bloke from Madrid.

Surprisingly I was referring to the DUP. The whole slaughtering of Corbyn is wonderfully ironic in hindsight.

    Typical childish response.
You carp and criticise from the sidelines without offering any insights or knowledge of your own.

It's easy to ridicule and disagree whilst never, ever offering any substance of your own.

What more substance do you want?

For a year now, the one benefit we've had hammered into us is that we'll 'take back control'. I've still not seen someone suggest a law that will be changed that would make a tangible difference to them- just this bizarre belief that an English person at the top is somehow better than a German/French/Italian.

The lack of substance is all yours, Col, I'm afraid.

I'll be honest with you, Col, it's hard to disagree with Stan's post @ 9:22AM, if that's what your yawn was in response to.

I may be wrong, but I think you and I are are two of the true conservatives (small 'c') on this board, but we mustn't be fooled into supporting Chairman May just because she purports to be a Tory. Others no doubt will disagree, but there are nuggets of value in real conservatism, just as there are aspects of value in liberalism and some of the leftish ideologies. Not everything, but some things.

Cameron, May, Johnson et al do not represent me and I didn't vote for them. Stan is correct that they're ****ing things up in a right royal way, albeit aided and abetted by years of a Blairist, right-on, left-liberal culture (that also pervades the Tory party now) that's evolved into an uneasy and unworkable compromise between pragmatism and common sense, political correctness and the bleedin' obvious.

I'm feeling jaundiced 'cos everything is ****.

Exactly what the religious say about their faith. And it is understandable to those who don't subscribe to certain versions of it. There are plenty of things I understand but don't agree with.

We've had this discussion before. If patriotism is wanting the best for your country then what we differ on is what is best for the country, not patriotism. If it's about some special bond between people who feel a certain way about place, even though they may have nothing else in common, then I'm excluded, which frankly I am happy to be.

Col you are one of my favourite posters especially as we seem to agree on nearly all football related matters. Regarding patriotism, I for one really struggle (much to my dissapointment) to feel patriotic in any way shape or form. I struggle to watch our national team play and I can't put my finger on it considering I used to travel the world following them!. One could argue that being part of the EU has contributed to my lack of patriotism. I honestly think that we have all been sold a dummy regarding brexit. 90% of people I know voted to leave due to immigration. What happens if a deal is struck that continues freedom of movement? I didn't vote on this matter because I didn't and still don't truly understand the benefits/implications of leaving the EU.

I don't lay the blame for terrorist attacks or burning tower blocks at Theresa May's door, but I blame her for a poor election campaign and a manifesto that took many of her own supporters for granted.

In some ways, she's been lucky personally since then. She's the only game in town for her party, if this country is to avoid a Marxist prime minister and complete bankruptcy. So she gets another chance - and the way she can put things right is to make a success of Brexit.

It's already clear that the old men in Brussels are looking to divide and rule here if they can, and certain elements of the media, the BBC-Remoan in particular (for which no one should be forced to pay a licence fee), will assist the EU bureaucrats in every way they can. May, Davis and the government Brexit team have just got to be bulletproof going forward, realising they have a fifth column behind them.

Negotiations have just begun. The next 12 months are some of the most critical in the history of this country

About half. But you can add on another undeclared 50% for illegal
Immigrants (seems there were quite a few in Grenfell Tower) none of whom are from the EU.
