You realise we kept Schneiderlin, Wanyama, and Mane for another season when they tried to kick up a fuss to make a move? Either Liverpool pay the £65 million plus valuation of the player, or he stays. Really can't get any simpler then that.

VVD has only got himself to blame, nobody forced him to sign a six year contract and now he has to do the decent thing and at least honour a part of it. This is really a case where Saints have to dig in to show that we are no pushovers anymore. I can see VVD being upset, but for the good of his long term career it would be better to knuckle down next season.

You may well be right. At this stage who knows?!

He won't be happy going back to training after this situation, especially with no manager in place yet. We'll see, one thing is quite clear though, he wants out. He has the power to get out too (unfortunately for football as a whole).

What "power" has he actually got though?, he is contracted to us for another five years and can only try to engineer a move by refusing to play. Now will he want to risk going through another season not playing while his reputation gets tarnished?. We still hold all the cards as it stands and VVD will ONLY move this Summer if we agree to it.

Does he? Or was he just tempted and thought we would let him go? We have no idea what his state of mind is. What we do know is that he has 5 years on his contract and we don't need or want to sell him. You should ask yourself whether it is wise for Liverpool, just to prove a point, to splash £70m on a CB instead of going elsewhere and spending less. Sounds crazy to me. Surely your scouting isn't that bad.

I don't know why they want him. He didn't even score against them.

I'd rather go elsewhere than pay 70mil.

Refuse to play and he'll be sold, most likely. Or you could keep him and make him train alone etc. but that's hardly productive for a smaller club (no offense meant) with a 50mil asset.

I'd hate to see that happen but player power is out of control.

What's more likely is that an agreement will probably be reached where the player will be guaranteed a move if he plays another season, it happened with Schneiderlin and he had a storming last season with us.

Scout abroad and you'd get 2 monster CB's for that.

We've recently bid for Koulibaly but it was rejected, maybe we'll try again. He's in the same class as VVD.
Probably end up at Chelsea tbh they also made a bid.

True, that's an option. I'm guessing an option that suits all parties to a certain degree too.

Trouble is he want's that top dollar a week and knows he can get it. Money makes things happen.

Not much in it but it seems people are still talking about it and the odds have started dropping again, currently 5/6 on Paddy Power.

    From today...

According to almost identical reports in the Telegraph and Times today, Liverpool could still sign van Dijk, providing the player himself actively seeks an exit…

    Bascombe writes:

And although there was a public statement withdrawing interest in Van Dijk and that is still the club’s position, it remains to be seen how the player himself interpreted events and whether the saga of his next move has run its course.

    Joyce writes:

They were forced to publicly withdraw interest in Virgil van Dijk after Southampton accused Liverpool of tapping up the defender, although that episode is unlikely to have run its course with the transfer window not even officially open.

Its all farcical. He'll probably go to Liverpool despite their 'official' apology. And with regards to his reputation being tarnished. I don't think he or another club will give a ****. As long as he and the club get what they want, the whole dishonourable business will just chug along.

Agree with that but it would be nice for a small club to to make a stand wouldn't it?

My view hasn't changed, I wouldn't sell him even for £60m this Summer. As good a deal as it may be there has to come a point where it's better for us to keep him.

He'll still likely be worth 50+ next Summer and imo will have bigger/better offers (not a dig).

I'd tell Virgil he was happy enough to sign a 6 year deal a year ago, he can honour at least a third. He won't be going anywhere this Summer but if he knuckles down will get it next.

Money does talk though, so wouldn't suprise me all that much if he ended up there tbh.

My worry is if we don't stand firm in this situation (espescially when we made a formal complaint, then we likely never will.

If he is sold, sell him to City or Chelski, for around £50-60M, just to **** off Liverpool!

This reminds me of when I got sent to bed without any dinner and came back downstairs an hour later with an apology and expectation of dinner. No dinner, so I went on hunger strike.

My mum said I was pathetic for a 26 year old.
