    There is no upside to appealing the red card - when the ban is extended arsene wenger will put on one of his "everyone is against me" faces

    From a neutral perspective, it's worth a shot considering everybody and their mother's (apart from Newcastle WUMs) can see now that Barton instigated it in an extreme manner, and has even admitted to overacting to get the red card. Wenger obviously knows that the FA at the very least won't want to look silly extending a ban while Barton gets off scott free for his lie.

    That said, I doubt the FA will feel enough pressure to rescind the ban on this one. Probably going to end up in nothing happening, as you were.

    I must say I think every football fan should be concerned about this ruling.

    Clearly, no matter your personal bias, Joey Barton picking Gervinho up by the shirt unprovoked and shaking him was more violent than Gervinho touching Barton on the Cheek over the top of two players while being held back. You really have to be stretching it to say different.

    The officials claim to have seen both incidents yet award Gervinho a red and Barton a yellow. The FA then uphold the decision. So for the first time we really have clear proof of a bias within the FA establishment. I suspect though it is not against Arsenal, but our old enemy racism. With few ethnic referees and few ethnic representatives on the FA, it is far more likely that systemic racism has raised its head. In some ways, I hope it is racism, the alternative almost appears worse.

    Ridiculous claim.

    Barton didn't do anything that warranted a red card, in my opinion, but even if he had done, the FA couldn't turn his yellow into a red.
    Similarly, Gervinho's offence was undoubtedly a sending off, by the letter of the law, so they weren't going to undermine the ref or send out mixed signals by nullifying or reducing the ban.

    This is only to do with Gervinho's appeal. Striking, or attempting to strike, another player is a red card in the rules. On the failure to control player charges the club have until the 18th to appeal, and Arsenal have until 6PM today to appeal against Song's suspension. Yes Barton's lifting Gervinho was violent, and I would personally red card him as a referee had I seen it (the referee didn't but still gave him a yellow, stopping retrospective action), but Gervinho's actions directly contravened the rules, I'm not sure if there's a rule or precedent against lifting a player by his shirt.

    Guess that's why they haven't given Song a ban for his stamp, because he is white.

    EDIT: Not gonna sneaky edit. Did song actually get suspended?

    Gervinio's offence was barely a sending off by the letter of the law, but as I said it is clearly stretching it beyond sanity to suggest that players can pick up players by the shirt two fisted and shake them without being sent off. The referee gave clearly disproportionate punishment claiming to see both offences. You simply cannot explain that bias away by procedure.

    sorry you apealed against the ban being excessive, a little stupid since that is the set ruling by the fa, but understandable given wengers state of mind.

    He may lodge a complaint saying his teeam should get 2 points for a draw next

    Sunderland made the mistake of appealing against the length of a ban for a red card last season.
    Their player got an additional game, as their appeal was deemed frivolous.

    Why no extra game for Gervinho?

    FA Rule 1.1.1;

    "Any team that has qualified, or is in the final qualifying stage for the UEFA Champions League will not be governed by the rules that apply to all other clubs within the Premier League. Any retrospective bans or additional punishment shall be cascaded to either of the following i) Wolverhampton Wanderers ii) Wigan Athletic iii) any newly promoted club at the discretion of the appeals panel, regardless of the offending clubs guilt."
