Team, I really like BOSSY GUEST in the old Hunt Cup of the morrow (5.00) and can see him being highly competitive off 103. In his pomp was rated as highly as 114 and that mark was justified given that in 2015 he won a very rich sales race at Newmarket and then went on run 4th in the 2,000 Guineas and 3rd in the Jersey behind some very, very good horses. However, Bossy Guest has not so much as been placed since and that is the obvious reason for his fall in the ratings. It must be pointed out though that in that time he’s still run some respectable races such as when 6th in the ’16 Hunt Cup and so far in ’17 has hinted that the old spark is still very much there as he was beaten just 1 length and 2 lengths in respectively the Newbury Spring Cup and the Victoria Cup. On that latter run, at Ascot, he stayed on in eye-catching, and I do mean eye-catching, style despite not having the clearest of runs and stepped up a furlong here looks most interesting. The good/firm ground should cause no worries as his 2,000 Guineas and Jersey runs were on such a surface and the barn are ticking over respectably with 5 winners already this month. The De Sousa boy has been booked and I’d recommend taking current odds of 25/1 each-way re this one as I’m of the opinion he could run a very, very big race in this heat.
Can I assume Bob will be having a wee dabble on Bacchus in the Jersey Stakes? Surely someone with his own wine business has to be on this one?
After the first day’s results, the bookies will have clipped the prices of any fancied Godolphin runner, so a couple of bets might have gone begging. I do like the chance of Laugh Aloud in the Duke of Cambridge as she has the profile of an improving filly and she may well be up to this step up in class in a race that features a couple of Group 1 performers. It would be ironic if Godolphin won the race with Usherette but her two places so far this term do not inspire confidence. Of those at bigger prices, I quite like Mix And Mingle but this needs a career-best effort by Chris Wall’s filly and she is not big enough for an each-way by my maths. She accounted for Qemah last time but that one will strip fitter here. The opening Jersey Stakes usually goes to a fast-improving lightly-raced type or a horse that ran well in a Guineas. Is Whitecliffsofdover better than his bare form? Will Le Brivido be effective on the quicker ground? Can headstrong Frankel colt Dream Castle make Josephine Gordon the second woman to win a Royal Ascot race? Is the step back to seven the key here for Daban? The big problem that I have with the Prince Of Wales’s Stakes is that the two key protagonists, Jack Hobbs in the Godolphin blue and Highland Reel in the Derrick Smith purple, both appeal more as twelve furlong horses. I cannot find any reason why Ulysses will suddenly become a Group 1 horse as he has been weighed down by hype most of his career. At the prices, I do like the Prix d’Ispahan winner MEKHTAAL, beaten favourite behind stablemate Almanzor in last year’s Prix du Jockey Club but conqueror of both the placed horses last time.
The horse I have been looking forward to seeing this Royal Ascot runs today in the feature race JACK HOBBS Lightly raced, impressive at Meydan earlier this year and will take a lot of beating. Also after what Lady Aurelia did yesterday who is not excited to see what HAPPY LIKE A FOOL does today! Hoping that Josephine Gordon can win on DREAM CASTLE in the opener and was going to put up Laugh Aloud...but just seen he is a NR
In the 3.05, I think Happy Like a Fool will take the spotlight today and yes, after yesterday's performance from Lady Aurelia, that is probably the horse to look out for; however, in the same race, there are 2 potentially smart performers in Mrs Gallagher and Formidable Kitt, but the one I'm really interested in, at a very nice price, is Mamba Noire.
Buick could have a great time later in the afternoon 4.20 Jack Hobbs 5.00 GK Chesterton 5.35 Grecian Light
Could be a day for the French Le Brevido 7/2 Qemah 15/8 Mekhtaal 10/1 Le Brevido looks particularly decent price if handling the ground- only going down to Brametot by short head, who looks potentially top class.
Punter's nightmare today imho. A day for small stakes plays at big prices. Neola win in the QMS Mekhtaal e/w in the POW. GK Chesterton e/w in the RHC But I'd rather be a bookie today. Might lay a few favs.
Minefield today, few darts on each race for interest. Dream Castle Mrs Gallagher / Maybride Qemah Jack Hobbs / Scottish G K Chesterton / GM Hopkins Tisbutadream
Surely a straightforward double on the first 2 favs today ?? 3/1 and 11/10 - and pop a treble in with teak hard highland reel ?? Surely Jack will find the ground to hard ?? I'm playing up yesterday's cash so what could possibly go wrong ?? Good luck to all
Playing catch up from yesterday's disastrous efforts 4:20 Jack Hobbs 5:00 Abe Lincoln (EW) 5:35 Gymnaste GLA
I've been putting some money on Le Brivido for this for the past month at prices between 4/1 and 11/2. I was massively confident that he offered the best form but now I've looked at the race I'm not so sure. I think it comes down to a decision on whether you think the UK 3yo colts (which I think are mediocre) are better than the French 3yo colts further muddied by 3yo filly form of Daban which on the face of it is good form but its difficult to quantify in relation to the colts. On the plus side it looks unlikely to me that anything outside of the first 3 of the betting will win (famous last words) so I think I'll place some small stakes on Dream Castle and Daban to cover the stake on Le Brivido.
Won the Irish Derby in a common canter on Good to Firm after being second to Golden Horn at Epsom on the same...
I think the prices between Jack Hobbs and Highland Reel should be switched. Gone for Jack Hobbs with Queens Trust to place
