To "push the envelope" would be to quote a saying that refers to the postage envelope.
Envelop would be to completely cover something.

"Push the envelope" is quite an uncommon phrase but it means to push boundaries.

I've got no ****ing clue what "Push the envelop" means.

I think it means that you push your envelopng article around whatever it is that you are attempting to envelop In Quentin's case, I suspect he is attempting to have his brain 'envelop' the English language with the objective of one day attaining a rudimentary undertanding of it
