I bought one of those Weber chimneys to help get the charcoal up to temperature quicker - brilliant, recommended. A gas barbecue just doesn't deliver the same results as charcoal.
I've got both, gas and charcoal. Charcoal is great but I have a problem finding charcoal that burns long enough. Gas is great for midweek, no time and you just want to grill a few chops, bits of chicken, sausages without having to wash up frying pans and what have you afterwards.
Hmm good tip, I might do that. I currently employ the build a pyramid method, which works of course, but I did wonder if those chimney things actually worked well enough to buy.
Can you get enough coal in to do the whole BBQ or does it essentially get a good core of coal white and ready?
You can get a good load in the chimney. Drop a couple of Weber BBQ lighter blocks at the bottom, then some charcoal. There's 2 different chimneys based on which size of Weber you have. I've never had to add more charcoal to the BBQ. Edit - We're also normally cooking for 4 or more.
If you want a portable BBQ - Get a Cobb. Brilliant. Lit and ready to cook in minutes, cooks for over 2 hours. Used it loads at the beach or in the Camper van.
I have got a gas one and use it every week. Its a lot easier than having to get coals going. Like Dennis i have got a smoker box for it to cook with. I will do loads of stuff in it, joints on a weekend, pizza, roast vegetables. Apparently you can also bake buns in it, but i don't think its possible as the wife struggles to light the thing (Bit too hard when you have to turn the gas on AND press the ignition button).
Behave. I purposely cooked too much so I could enjoy the proper BBQ taste of chicken the next day, without having to resorting to any effort.
I've got a few bits here if you want me to put them in Tupperware for you? I cooked fresh instead, no effort
I couldn't give less of a **** to be honest. As long as there's plenty of it and it's been cooked to a certain degree I'll eat the bastard. No bread cake or salad though, those carbs aren't good for you. Just meat. And booze.
