I don't get it though. How can a nurse for example live in there? I'm sure I saw a nurse on tv last night who lived near by.

Simple. The nurse is a Council tenant and the Council pays the rent, or rather we all do through Housing Benefits. The flat used to belong to the (Tory) Council but the venerable (Tory) Mrs Thatcher declared open season on Council flats and sold them off. Former Council residents cashed in, sold up and moved to caravans in Canvey Island when the flats were worth about £50k and they were scooped up by investors who now rent them back to the (Tory) Council that sold them in the first place.

Flats still owned and rented by the Council are probably £400 a month or thereabouts.

Free market economy and all that.

Housing shouldn't be in the hands of the council. It's too much open to abuse. We have a Housing Executive which is non political.

455k for a house in Ponders End. Cash payment, too.

I miss the old place, but the folly gladdens my heart nowadays.

It's the bed made for us in the 1980's and we're having to lie in it now.

A minority made a bit of dough out of the right to buy scheme but the cost to local authorities renting these properties back is staggering. Thatcher thought once everyone bought their own flats there would be no need for Council housing any longer. At the same time she brought in a ruling to stop Councils building any more of their own properties, hence the shortage crisis we are in now. Silly cow.

I don't think unprecedented levels of immigration have helped much, either.

We're not allowed to talk about that, though.
