James - where did you get that article from, I would seriously be interested in having a proper look at it, have you got a link, because it's a thumbnail I don't appear to be able to copy the link address or is it a scan from an old newspaper?

I started going to the Gills the following season, giving my age away now!
Although my first ever game was a friendly which I think was in that same season.

In answer to your question, the ground was far from today's stadiums...

The Town End had no roof, oops that's the same, some things never change <laugh>
The Rainham End was a corrugated roof.
You used to be able to walk from one end of the ground to the other round the back of the Gordon Road stand. That eventually got closed off for obvious reasons.
    The toilets were absolute sh*t!
For some reason I can always remember a small shop somewhere in the town end that sold a variety of memorabilia.
    Standing.
I really cannot remember the price to get in, probably no more than 50p
Sorry the old brain matter fails me on any more.

Despite all that I have some good memories there though, I can feel a blog coming on now <ok>

It was in the League paper yesterday (Sunday). I mentioned it on GillsConnect but forgot to put it on here. There are short bio's of all that team and what they are doing now.

21,000 top capacity, before the days of men in yellow jackets!

This bit from that site nearly brings a tear to your eye...

'The answer is you knew you were part of something real, you knew that the people around you wanted to be there, they were willing to put up with the abysmal conditions because it was their team and they accepted that it was all part of the deal and that feeling when your team scored and you got swept up and down and around the terraces made up for everything.'
