When we still had a trawler fleet I bought my first house on Hessle Road, my neighbours and drinking buddies were mostly deckies, bobbers etc - it would be no exaggeration to say that they were without a shadow of a doubt the most superstitious bunch you'll ever meet i.e. no wearing green, no whistling on deck, the word salmon was a no-no (it's 'pink fish') ditto 'rat', if a trawlerman saw a woman with babe in arms they would hand over every silver coin from their pockets (gave them great luck) ....... there were loads of others that I can't recall.

According to my neighbour, babes in arms were really lucky omens - coming from East Hull the superstitious nature of these blokes was a real eye opener.

My Grandpa was on the trawlers, fell over board and never found. Had a house on Hessle Road too. My Grandma was convinced it was because my aunt won a goldfish at Hull fair, they were supposed to be bad luck too. We were never allowed to take the gold fish on the hook a duck as a consequence.

My Dad's cousin also fell overboard, washed up in Russia.

    Our 'excessive thoroughness'?!
**** me, if anything it's the opposite Leonid old boy.

Try Switzerland, Germany if you want to see that.
As for the fish n chips, help him out please someone. He's only been exposed to the garbage served up in London, and probably wonders what all the fuss is about .
Take him to Cave st or anywhere half-decent that does de-boned, de-skinned, beef dripping fried haddock, chips and scraps (and **** the gimmicky chip spice).

    Unnecessary mention of chip spice
No normal person has it on chips when they're having them with fish
It's purely for 'fries' with a burger or pizza or suchlike

I was concerned one of our less discerning forum members was going to give it product placement, so had to nip in sharpish.

We used to live on humber street way back not to sure about all the pubs the fishermen went to when they got home, used to meet dad when he docked early hours of the morning he used to take us to a little bakers off the docks ,you could knock on the back door even though it was shut get a hotcake fresh out of the oven hot with dripping butter and bacon it was great.

Used to play on the building site next to the Crab factory.

He's a got lot of work to do.
Get his coaching and backroom staff in place plus he's likely to need up to 10 players with the losses expected.

Quite looking forward to him getting to grips with it all,i think we may end up with a few player surprises coming in.

I do think he has been promised support as he himself was talking to other clubs boro and sunderland 2 of them and i think they were interested as they did not make their moves till after slutsky opted to take the clubs offer.

My comment was a bit tongue in cheek, not sure if the green is bad luck thing is only for the trawler men or sailors in general. If it was all sailors then its a bit daft having a green pub on the dockside.

If it was only the trawler men, then it was a clever way to keep those smelling of fish out of the pub.

Started in Moscow and 5 club moves later he'll still never left Moscow and he's back where he started !

...I'm not convinced he would want to be in this country at all? (although salary might be tempting I suppose)

We managed to tempt Gedo here and he'd never played outside of Egypt. I imagine there will be a few Russian players that see us as an opportunity.
