Salcido is on his way to Mexican club Tigres on a 'trial' with an option to buy. Well, that's another first team squad number available.
Ah, the coveted number 26 - they'll be flocking to wear that one. If that doesn't bring the big names to the Cottage, then I don't know what will! Shame it didn't work out with Salcido. I was really excited by that signing - almost as excited as I am now that I've seen Riise the Elder doing what we thought Salcido was going to do.
Best bit of news I've heard for a while. Don't they always say never buy a player on the back of a good world cup. In this instance they were right.
Borne out by Halliche. And close run thing with Senderos, what with injuries and so on. Third time lucky or will things always come in threes?
We signed Senderos before the world cup, not as a result of his performances at it. His injury was in the first Swiss match at the tournament - if we hadn't already signed him, we wouldn't have done so until he was fit again. anyway, I think he's doing well for us. Can't disagree with you concerning Halliche and Salcido though.
I'm very happy about this Salcido news. Now we need a RB and pacy striker ... Rodallega or Odemwingie would do nicely. The gossip page has us linked, once again, to Peter Crouch, but I don't see Crouch providing anything that Bobby Zamora doesn't already provide. We need more youth and pace, not more big and slow. Anyone watch ManC v Swansea last night? Sergio Aguero is some player! Reminds me of Messi.
It puts our Europa League final defeat into context. In 15 months since we took Athletico all the way to the wire their keeper has joined Manchester United, one of their strikers was voted best player at the World Cup and the other has been trasferred to Man City for squillions and looks set to be one of the biggest stars in the Premier League. It makes our achievement - and what we almost pulled off - all the more impressive. Seeing Smalling playing right back for United makes me wonder what would have happened if we had played him there instead of Baird for the final.
Never thought about it that way before, Capt. but you make a very good point. We narrowly lost to a team packed with some of the world's top talent.
I think he's leaving because he couldn't settle in London, although LB or RB he'd still struggle in the Prem in my opinion. Wish him well, though - he just looked out of his depth too often, and at 31 it's probably a bit late to think he's going to adapt. For anyone who's forgotten, here's why he wasn't happy: http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2011/may/20/carlos-salcido-fulham-burglary
Someone told me that he was burglared last week, but is Mexico safer than London?? NOT Just an excuse to escape!
That's a bit harsh. From his family's point of view I can imagine that being burgled in a foreign country would be unsettling in ways that wouldn't feel nearly so bad in a more familiar place. I've never been burgled myself, fortunately, but I gather that victims often have a sense of heightened vulnerability and insecurity. If someone was struggling to adapt to a new culture already, I can well see how it could be the final straw. And if his family were feeling like that, it's understandable to want to be able to be with them in a place where they were going to feel safer. I don't think any of this necessarily explains his poor performances - the date of the article was only this May, after all - but it does explain why he has decided not to stay and fight for a place. Good luck to him and his family, even if we're not necessarily sad to see him replaced in the first team.
