Is anybody else getting increasingly tired of the bold claims of journalists, and how quick they are to proclaim something a 'disaster' or 'the best' after just one game? Here's an example that came up again tonight: On 28th July, the day Aguero signed for City from Spain, having never played an EPL game in his life before, Mark Bolton tweeted this: "Sergio 'Kun' Aguero is now THE best player in the Premier League. Worth every penny Man City have spent - "Kun! Kun! Kun!" #mcfc #mancity" Tonight, having seen Aguero come on for just over half an hour against a tiring Swansea City side, on his home turf, and score two goals and assist another, Mark Bolton tweeted this: "@aguerosergiokun ... I rest my case. #mcfc #mancity #sergioaguero " Now, does this make him 'THE best player in the Premier League'? Scoring two against a newly promoted and tiring side who were playing away from home? Here is a quick list of players, off the top of my head, who did something similar last season: Berbatov (hattrick against Liverpool in a 3-2 win, 5 against Blackburn in a 7-1 win) Rooney (2 against West ham in to win 2-3 from 2-0 down) Carroll (2 against Man City in a 3-0 win, one a 25 yarder) Torres (2 against Chelsea in a 2-0 win) Bale (hattrick against Inter in a 4-3 loss) And not to mention some of the Chelsea team who scored for fun in the early stages of last season. Whether you question the talent of those above or not, they did something similar to Aguero in scoring multiple goals to win their team a game (or at least retain some dignity in Bale's case.) I'm not saying by any means that Aguero is rubbish, but that his performance against Swansea City can hardly be used as proof of him being the EPL's best player. He may well turn out to be what Bolton thinks he is, but to claim so originally on very little evidence, and to later 'substantiate' these claims based on a match against a newly promoted side is very short-sighted.
I totally agree mate when it comes to journalism all I want is a match report about the football and not a fookin lifestyle report or personal opinion of some hack on the players "greatness" one week and how he's "lost his touch" the next week. I have a brain and eyes so I can make my own mind up about these things However......this is modern life where every one wants their opinion to be heard hence twatter, facebook, not606 etc etc
Agree but you can see Aguero's quality in this case. Far too early to suggest he's the best player in the league though
When he does it against the likes of Manure, pulling them back from the brink of defeat with moments of brilliance, then you can make these claims and not the over the top claims in the papers today.Lets see what he does on a freezing wet sunday afternoon at Sunderland (no offence sunderland supporters)
The papers are full of these silly reactions, I've seen better articles on here than in the tabloids.
As much as I hate them and their tired old cliches it's not like there aren't fans making the same kind of statements: Kuyt will never be good enough to play for Liverpool, Lucas will never be good enough to play for Liverpool, NGog is to blame for everything bad in the world... Interesting documentary t'other night called 'Starsuckers' on our primal need for celebrity and how journos are increasingly reliant on bogus feeds for their stories: http://www.channel4.com/programmes/starsuckers/4od
MFG. You forgot this well known cliche. Liverpool paid too much for Stewart Downing...However if the Govan Git paid the money..it would have been ''excellent business''
it's not just Aguero... I identified that De Gea may not be as world class as everyone (Papers) was screaming about as utd signed him (I was the first to identify Athletico's goal scoring averages with/without him) but while I stood firm by saying he is not the second coming of christ, I said he was a good keeper. THEN SUDDENLY the papers are saying how this world class keeper is a complete flop!! - this is not the case... If the papers had reported laterally in the first place then there would be no or little expectation on De Gea and the faults caused would have been overlooked leaving less pressure on the player. While De Gea is responsible for his errors, he is not a flop... Stupid papers
Bozz. Then you have Man United fans screaming that De Gea '''cannot be judged on two games'' yet they are constantly on here dogging Downing and Henderson out of it. Both are apparently ''useless''. De Gea isn't being judged on two games, he's been judged overall. His record in Spain lets be fair is good but not fantastic by any means. He's a good keeper and will become better, but he's not in any shape or form world class.
To be fair Mark Bolton must have seen him play a hell of a lot of times in la liga so knows how good he is. There is a definite case for saying he is the best player in the premiership.
RVF. Best keeper in the premiership?.....He's taken over from Almunia and Gomes as the joke keeper in the premiership.
KPR, thats the point I made. I hope fergie doesn't ship him out too quickly (Like he did Bosnich and like we did Friedel) as he does have the potential to be very decent
No no no no no I was not saying that Di Gea was the best keeper in the prem . I was saying there was a case for Aguero being the best player.
Bozz. There is something you have to remember. For every David Seaman theres a Manuel Almunia, for every Pepe Reina there is a Chris Kirkland for every Edwin Van Der Sar...theres a Massimo Taibi. Since Ferguson has been at Man United, he's had 16 goal-keepers and found two good ones. I reckon we're going to have the same trouble when Reina goes. Thats unless Petr Gulasci lives up to his promise.
Dave. It was 180 minutes and he's made 3 howlers. Anyway some of the blame must be applied regarding two of those mistakes to Vidic and Ferdinand, Vidic didn't close down on one of them, and for the other, Ferdinand was ball-watching. Something he is known for doing. Its the reason why he's not regarded as being a world class centre half. His concentration levels are suspect and always were. However it would be unfair to judge De Gea now, as it would Jordan Henderson.
Aguero can't be judged like that. Andy Carroll wasn't judged as a major success when he made Citys centre halves look like Titus Bramble. He has to make all defenders look like Titus Bramble before anyone can proclaim he's a success.
