The DUP!! They think they will hold the balance of power. Would TM really go into an alliance with a sectarian party?

It was a wider constituency after 1918 so she is right. Before it became a wider constituency prior to 1918 there were 2 MPs elected for what is now the modern constituency but the actual Borough of Canterbury prior to 1918 was Tory since 1841. North Thanet was in this constituency prior to 1983 as well.

No surprise. The Uni has turned Lincoln into a very tight marginal.

There won't be another election soon and May will stay on now until after Brexit. Then she will stand down and probably leave politics I would think.

It has been a swing seat for many an election. 1974/76 Labour, 1979 Tory, 1997 Labour, 2010/2015 Tory, 2017 Labour. Correct me if I am wrong IMPS.

In the South, the impressive result is Portsmouth South voting Labour. Despite being very much a "working class" city, Portsmouth is not really a hotbed of Labour voters, unlike the great city of Southampton with sometimes 2 Labour MPs and a Labour City council.

Very similar to the Exeter / Plymouth Situation . I was stunned when Plymouth went to Labour in the night .

That will depend. I don;t expect many if any Tories to rebel over Brexit votes and I would suggest there are a fair few Labour Leavers that will definitely rebel. She might have more support on Brexit policies than other policies.

Until they stitched us up with boundary changes, how can areas outside of the city limits be incorporated into a constituency?

****ing Royston Smith back in with about a majority of 35....:steam:

Brexit will not start until after the German elections in September. Besides she is going to have to rethink her strategy in the wake of the result. Is she really going to stuff her cabinet full of Tories? She would be wise to negotiate with JC to see if there is any common ground to provide a programme for all the country with non Tories in cabinet posts. Just having Tories and purusing her hardline exit is just more divisive that the electorate on balance has rejected.
How did that happen? By the skin of his teeth. If only, if only the Green and Lib Dem voters had backed Labour we could have been celebrating a double for the city.

Yes it was a swing seat but with big winning margins through the 80s and 90s either way. Tories would win big or Labour would win big. Since the Uni started to explode it has become tighter and tighter. So it used to be a swing seat but now is a marginal. A thousand or 2 either way.

Uni opened in 96 but only 500 students back then. Since 2001 the majorities have shrunk and there have been no more big 10k+ margins.

In a City of circa 130,000 it makes a big difference now that the Uni of Lincoln alone has 13,000 students. Then the old Bishop Grosseteste Uni has another 2000.

We are over-run with (bloody ;) ) students here and all the investment goes into the university and not the locals. That causes a lot of resentment in the city. All we hear about is how much investment is being made in the city yet everything that happens is in that 1 mile square around the university.

What is Nuttall on about. He went into Boston thinking that the highest leave vote would vote for him. He had no chance there.

Lol. Standing down as leader for a "new" leader. Wonder if they will let Farage have a go for once. lol

Is she just f****** stupid? A coalition with a sectarian party to get through her Brexit policy when there is so much more to be done. Ian Paisley Jr as Foreign Secretary then. I cannot believe this. Must go to the BBC website.

It is a looser kind of agreement. DUP want a hard Brexit while Northern Ireland as a whole voted to remain. Obviously that hardline party do not see the benefits of keeping an open border that has advantages for businesses throughout the whole of Ireland.
