But that is the thing to be debating. Forget about players leaving - that happens. I accepted Vigil was leaving this summer a long time ago. Him signing that five year contract was always going to be meaningless in terms of his time here. The only debate - whether around Vigil or any other player we sell - should be around price. I absolutely agree that we sold Mane cheaply. It is very important that this time we get the price. And then, if we do get it, that we reinvest it properly. Something which we again got wrong with Mane. I would love us to get £60m for Virgil. Do I have any faith that we'll get that? None whatsoever.
Agree with Blackmore on Twitter. Saints will have to sell if fee is way above the £50 million the scouse loving media are reporting. Or he will have to stay 1 more season
I'm as frustrated as everyone else about the prospect of VVD leaving, especially if it's Liverpool. But think a few are going too far in almost blaming Beefy for it - it's not his fault if Virgil leaves!
And for similar reasons, it is why I always maintained that we would never sell him to Barca or Madrid (even though I think he is good enough). No doubt they would rather see him playing for a Liverpool or a City etc for a couple of years first, and then judge whether to sign. How often do Barca or Madrid sign someone from a club like us? Even if it costs them another £20m, I'm sure clubs of their size wouldn't care.
Nah people are getting riled because Beefy is being completely unemotional about him leaving and who he is joining and most other people aren't in the same place as him. (Not to say he is in the wrong there).
But it's not like people haven't had the opportunity in the past to get used to this. Maybe, just maybe, us selling Virgil with his five-year contract will finally get people to open their eyes.
I use to get attached to players. But realised it wasn't doing my health any good in doing so, especially with how many players see us as a stepping stone. I now just enjoy it while they are here. Player power in football has changed the game big time. I say the same **** every season now. Should just have my posts copy and pasted.
Problem with that is it is good in the short term, bad in the long term. If we start to get that reputation, then other players are going to be more reluctant to join us. Realistically players join us for the chance to impress in the PL and move to a top 6 club. If we are seen as an 'easy to move on from' club it probably makes signing them in the first place that little bit easier
Hopefully. People have been clinging on to this only 2 years or less on contract bollocks as a last hope imo. Virgil and Ryan going should put that to bed
