You are in danger of losing the respect of even those that have previously supported you ... take a hint.

I know the feeling of work coming home with you! There are times when its mid night and I am laying in bed writing emails and thinking no this cant be right, funny thing is though I am not the only one as there are others on the other end responding to those emails!

Vicious circle, I would love to be able to say screw it and do my own thing hmmm maybe one day I will get fed up and start my own thing even if its little money at least you decide what happens, when and where...

If you're sending email whilst in your bed, then you need to seriously examine your work life balance mate

It's such an intrusive medium in the age of the tablet and smart phone. No one expects me to reply to an email out of hours, as they know I don't read them, if it's uber urgent I'll reply to a text or answer the phone

I'm a construction project manager. Civils, not buildings, major projects.

Bombed my A levels out as I was rather feckless and wanted a job/money so took the first apprenticeship I was offered, which was engineering in textiles for a company called Courtaulds.

Very cliched for the north west of England, working in't Mill.

After a year I realised it was **** and that the whole industry was ****ed so I took a job on an M25 widening scheme to do a bit of working away and got hooked on major construction projects. Did a couple of years on projects like that, mainly in the highway labs, before deciding to get qualified so found a job which also sent me to "Uni" part time and did Civil Engineering. Which is how I ended up in Swansea.

Worked for the local authority for about 8 years and by the time I left was into land surveying. Went out into the big bad contracting world and developed the surveying into site engineering then onwards and upwards via a couple of major players to where I am now, which is at a construction contractor one rung below the big boys. Hence, not bogged down by endless, mindless, H&S issues and can actually construct ****.

Currently running and £12 million development in North Devon. Which, having taken six hours to get home on Friday, is too ****ing far away.

That's not a regular thing, but it does happen when a project for instance is coming to an end and close to deadline or some twat forgot to do something that was urgent!

You will find though in corporate world the more they pay or higher up you go that they don't pay you for a 9-5 job per say they buy a portion of your life! I am glad am not in that position but I see it from lot of people like my Director etc...

I'm an MD, and I don't do it, nor do I expect my employees to. There's simply no need, before email existed important projects and deadlines still had to be met. These days most email is about corporate arse covering and people remembering **** that they should have done during the working day.

The macho corporate idea, that you somehow have to be in the office at the crack of dawn and available 24/7 to reply to bollocks emails is one of the reasons so many people suffer from stress these days. Work to live seems to be a forgotten concept

Agree to an extent, but that's the thing though lot of the times for me it ends up because someone else forgot to do something that was meant to be done the previous day/days!

The managers/directors see it as hard working when people are doing lot of hours and I tend to disagree because its not my fault I get to do my job in the working hours, ok not always depending on the deadlines.

The hours depends on the project really for me, recently I had a project of merger and relocation. The lease expires on particular month and have to relocate to another site but the negotiation and leasing signing took so long that it left less than 2 weeks to do all the internal construction and IT setup, private network and so on, for lot of the people on that project it more or less became a 24/7 hour job and that's how it goes sometimes.

There's always times when we have to work longer hours to get something done, that's always been the case mate, and comes with the territory of senior management.

My point was about how these days that the 24/7 availability via email has become the accepted norm all the time in the corporate world, and it simply doesn't have to be like that.

I used to manage teams in London and New York.

The New Yorkers would think nothing of calling me in London up until 5pm their time. The concept of a transatlantic time difference seemed completely alien to them, possibly because I always took their calls.

Could I get hold of any of the ****ers after 5pm their time? No chance!

This is more to do with proving a point to managers/directors oh look how late and hard I worked! I find those are the useless ones and get far by brown nosing rather than knowing the stuff...come across those all the time...

  14. This is what you wrote at the end of your opening post:-

"So what do you do for work ? No fake Lawyer jobs please, and any helicopter pilots will need to post proof of their private pilots licence :)"

Now, if you had wanted to add some weight to your argument, then you should have resisted the urge to include ****ty comments like that.

Meanwhile, I'm getting heat from Bod, who seems to be in yet another frenzy about things, and yet I don't see him kicking your arse for starting with the ****, in the first place!

Yup, I have a friend who works for a company designing websites and his job is ****ing killing him.
You get some sales rep **** who has never designed a website in his life and a customer will say "We want this function, and that function, and we want it in 3 weeks"
And the sales twat will be like "Oh no problem!"
And then give the project details to my mate who will be like "erm.....this is 2 months work right here" and the sales rep is all "Well it needs to be done in 3 weeks".
So to hit the deadline my mate has to work his ****ing arse off doing ridiculous levels of overtime, for no extra pay. His salary is generous mind, but if I had to work 14 hour days 6 days a week.......**** that!

  19. Yet, Pixie wrote this at the end of his OP:-

"So what do you do for work ? No fake Lawyer jobs please, and any helicopter pilots will need to post proof of their private pilots licence :)"

It is absolutely clear that he started this thread with no intention other than have yet another pop at me.

I don't see you aiming any of that righteous indignation of yours at Pixie.

    Oh, what a surprise!

    Why not?

This thread was clearly start by Pixie in order to take cheap wum-pops at me.

The fact is, that Pixie cannot start a thread without it having some slant towards me.

If Pixie had started this thread without him having taken a pop at me, you might have an argument. As things stand, you don't.

If that is the case then why was the thread ticking along nicely for 4 pages before you came blundering in with your size 12's to derail it.

And on that note, you do actually pretend to be a lawyer, so what he said was factually correct..........
