It's my daughter's birthday in two weeks time and we've booked a meal in one of the resturants at Borough High Street with a surprise for her to then go up the Shard afterwards. Makes you think 'What if?', but we'll still go on the night. There's just no predicting where or when these incidents may happen so life must go on as normal...
I'm not convinced this thing is over yet. Heavily armed anti-terrorist police units are currently gearing up and appear to be preparing for a confrontation. There could be other terrorists holed up somewhere. Although it could just be a search routine with no chances being taken. I also understand that the SAS were among the first security forces to arrive on scene.
Seems it is precautionary but they can't take any chances. SAS Helicopter landed on the bridge within minutes of the police arriving...
3 successful terrorist attacks in 3 months, 5 foiled in the same period. Over 35% success rate. Expect more both lone idiot and small cells happy to die making people hate them. Incredible response from emergency services last night. We need better intelligence.
Very troubling times. If we learn that these three were also known extremists, what is to be done in relation to other known extremists resident in the UK? Internment? How effective is that though? It was said to be a breeding ground for the IRA.
The intelligence services need more resources for sure. They are doing an amazing job already, but there are over 20 thousand current Islamic extremist suspects in this Country and they're the ones that are known!! There are 500 plots currently being investigated. With such overwhelming numbers the time has come to completely take off the gloves. Liberals will whine and Muslims will feel persecuted, but we need to act with an iron fist. I'm not a fan of internment, but I think that the time has come to remove ALL people from our streets when there is ANY clear evidence of support for extremism. Whether they are planning an attack or just sympathetic, we need to get them off the streets. All hate preaching needs to be stopped and all social media sites need to be cleared of any support of these nut jobs. Unless we strike back hard and ignore all the PC crap, nothing will change.
my take is we don't give more power to an already corrupt government>>>>>>>>do you really think giving them more power for spying will stop any more attacks? we currently supply extreme Islamic states with weapons and money, so please stop this with my country is under attack>>>>>>one day you will realise that the real face of the bogey man is white and wears a bowler hat and old school tie.
PC Crap. As part of the international community, this country is using weapons to defeat Daesh, as is slowly succeeding. That's the driving factor behind the current suicide murders, but when Daesh has been defeated in the battlefield, the Islamic extremists will invent new reasons to take innocent life.
There's no evidence that the Saudi Arabian Government does this, Strolls, and I'm not aware of any Western Government accusing it of doing so. Of course, there is a serious problem, with Wahhabist extremists in Saudi Arabia, and some of that has come over here. We have to be far less tolerant of extremist views, and tackle the internet spread of extremism, including through the big internet giants which until now have been above the law
Last month, Theresa May was in Saudi Arabia, selling £3+ billion worth of British arms which the Saudis will use against Yemen. British military actively assist the Saudi bombing raids, which have killed >10,000 civilians. There are now signs of famine, and a Yemeni child dies every 10 minutes from preventable disease, according to Unicef. Libya, Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan... we have left a trail of destabilisation across the Middle East and we are (both directly and indirectly) responsible for the deaths of 100,000's (possibly even millions) of civilians. Anyone really think our 'War on Terror' is working, or that we have played no part in fomenting the rise in militant ideologies that result in these attacks? I find it difficult to accept that all of this happens in a vacuum, but if you read the papers you'll find little coverage on the shocking reductions in Police numbers and the vast cost of monitoring these individuals - but you will get a lot of meaningless flag waving and dog-whistle calls for arbitrary 'crack-downs'. I think our politicians (of all persuasions) have let us down.
That's not an answer. This offers nothing that will bring an end to the Islamic terrorist attacks on innocent British people. What is your practical and realistic plan that will keep you and your loved ones safe the next time they venture out of an evening?
It's all a bit ****ed up.....we need to ban single faith schools for ALL religions and get these cretins to integrate into society instead of being isolated within their ghettos in some inner city ****hole (Bradford, Burnley, Blackburn, Rochdale, Birmingham....the list goes on). All clerics who preach hatred need removed immediately from the country. Anyone seen flying an ISIS flag, celebrating these attacks in the street, or significantly spending time online on their websites should also be removed. "Freedom fighters" who head off to Syria/Iraq etc shouldn't be allowed to return. If they do return they spend 6-12 months tagged and undergo severe interrogation to ascertain the intentions of their trip and why they have returned. Heavy armed police/military presence within these Muslim strongholds. Enhanced investment into intelligence services, with open disregard to the suspects rights over surveillance - we are far too worried about human rights in respect to this with our approach at the moment. We are currently too liberal a nation that appears frightened to adopt a more hardline approach, so now is the time to take the gloves off and live by "Big Boys Rules". There are over 23000 Muslims currently suspected of hardline views in UK, how do you cope with those numbers? It seems to me that the Muslim communities aren't doing enough to police themselves, and will surely soon start to feel the backlash for their impotence in this matter.
