Can anyone foresee a realistic scenario in which UK would consider a launch politically independent of the US? Also there are many that believe the system is not technically independent of the US either. For example: https://www.publications.parliament.uk/pa/cm200506/cmselect/cmdfence/986/986we13.htm In fairness there are articles that suggest there is technical independence, but that would appear to be restricted to the instant of launch, for example if there was nothing leading up to the requirement. But surely such an event would be in the event of global nuclear war in which case our contribution would surely be pretty pointless. If there is any lead up then the dependence on US maintenance and other technical help surely means there is no medium or long term independence. Also don't forget that as members of NATO, we have a mutual defence alliance with the US and many other countries over and above that of the so-called independent deterrence. Conventional armed forces are surely the only rational deterrence?
Voting in Thanet next week has taken a twist!! http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-kent-40129826 Innocent until proven guilty but surely his credibility is completely undermined. Reluctant to publicly condemn Trump over Paris, May shows less reticence to criticise the CPS and (politically neutral) Electoral Reform Society - accusing them of politically motivated prosecutions!! The government are starting to morph into the current White House........
How about just generally? It would take something totally unforeseeable, in my opinion. As for the US, they're currently being run by an orange, who's in Putin's pocket. I'd say that they're out of the running. Probably not the greatest time to disarm.
In lighter news, there's no chance of the Dire Leader flubbing her policies on Women's Hour - because that's the latest appearance she's chickened out of, sending Justine Greening in her place. Meanwhile, staff at BBC Scotland turned up to work on Wednesday to find this sign in their Pacific Quay studio in Glasgow... please log in to view this image
Before you can disarm you have to be armed. How are we armed with a Trident we cannot use in any normal circumstance, if we have to use it then the UK is finished. We are only a small land mass a few bombs will destroy it completely. Or are people suggesting we should use it against non nuclear states? Do you not see that by possessing trident you make the country a target in the event of a nuclear war and therefore it is a liability to house such weapons. Scandinavia, Germany, Poland, Italy, Spain are all large European nations that do not feel the need the to spend billions on looking big. If Russian decided to invade the UK our only defence is the USA or possibly China whether we have Trident or not is irrelevant. In any case I'm sure the USA would park some here if we didn't choose to have them. The argument for Britain spending billions is a classic example of Emperors New Clothes.

That is so ironic as it is the Tories who are screaming 'foul' for doing this very thing!! I think ' ****ing hypocrites' is the phrase being sought!!
It's just like the Mail crying foul at how "biased" the other night's debate was, because for the first time in years the BBC's political coverage wasn't a right-wing echo chamber like the farce that is Question Time or their news programming. On the subject of right-wing echo chambers, for some reason the Express are reporting that David Davies got the best of the following exchange Based on their logic, Hull got the best of us a couple of weeks ago...
A journalist prepared to fight back!! Some of the comments on the Tweet are priceless, but for anyone to consider that a victory for an apparently drunk Dave Davis needs their head examined!!
The worst part about that is that the BBC have been told what they can say by the Tories. Are we in ****ing Russia now, then? Authoritarian old ****bag.
It's getting worse: I am sure they are not alone, but the Tories are certainly happy to push every possible fake news story. And no surprise there, seeing as who their hero across the Pond appears to be and how much success he has had following a similar tack. Latest up is the Tory stooge on the BBC pre-Question Time programme accusing Labour of introducing a 'garden tax'!!!! WTF is that about??
