6:50 Peterport Much better than distance beaten on debut, made a rapid move from well out the rear but unable to sustain the effort. Tomorrow looks weaker and odds fair enough.
2.50 NOTTINGHAM- PRIMANORA - 4/1 Has shown a lot of promise in his maidens over C+D. She is also interestingly a half sister to Danzeno and Demora both listed and group winning sprinters both trained by Michael Appleby, who obviously likes this family! Has the breeding to do better than she has done to start off and is currently a decent price!
6:50 KEMPTON - ZUBAYR - 10/1 Post here about once a year when I have a strong fancy (probably with a 50/50 strike rate so i'm giving you one winner every two years .i.e. take this with a pinch of salt). The top three in the market in this one are all very unexposed and have a significant weight pull with my selection. However, i think they'll need to have a big step forward to match the class of Zubayr. If you look at the form of his two french maidens that he finished close up in, in one he was beaten a couple of lengths over 11f by Harlem. That one was beaten a length over similar distance by One Foot In Heaven, who finished a good second to Seventh Heaven in a group 2 at newmarket that month. Given that Zubayr is not far behind that level at all, i think that unless one of the unexposed types towards the head of the market is a serious animal getting towards group 2 quality (nothing in their performances so far to suggest anywhere near that level at this stage of their development) then Zubayr has to be close to getting up at the finish here. Confident each way bet, with the surface the only thing tempering enthusiasm a little.
Another Touch/Playful Sound at Nottingham. And I've backed Sandymount Duke and Ballyoisin at Punchestown.
8:20 Kempton - Dark Devil 7/1 has been pulled out of a couple of recent races when due to run and this is it's first attempt on the all weather coming back from some time off. However I'm not too concerned about the absence and if keeping its entry tonight I'd expect it to go close. Price not massive and a bit too skinny to play ew so gone win only
I might be showing my age here, but on perusing the card for the last at Punchestown I saw a horse named "On Raglan Road" and thought the name sounds familiar from yesteryear. Lo and behold the Wylie's had a horse with the very same name with Howard Johnson (foaled June 1st 2003) who had the distinction of giving 5lbs and a beating to the mighty Dunguib in a bumper at .................................................... Punchestown. Small world eh?
