What about changing the assistant? Alex Ferguson managed to stay afloat by appointing a new coach every 3 or 4 years, thus giving the training side a freshening up,
I think we were all expecting this. My hope is they announce this as his LAST 2 year contract. Ugh the worst part is hearing every ground singing 'arsene wenger we want you to stay' for 2 more years
Apart from saying you think Tuchel hasn't been any good can you give me a more indepth analysis why he wouldn't have at least been a good candidate to take over Arsenal. As far as i can see he ticks a number of boxes: - Young and has many years ahead - plays attractive football - Nurturing a number of young players who are turning out to be brilliant - Would work under a director of football structure - Doesn't need unlimited money to spend - Won the German Cup - Kept Dortmund in the CL and got to the quarters of the CL If your idea to transition away from Wenger involves keeping Wenger in power with full control and his transfers and waiting for the top level managers to be come available (probably next year so will get snapped up by other clubs) then you are holding yourself back for another 2 years.
Still can't believe anyone actually believes this. All the trouble him staying has caused and will cause. It has affected the fans and the players to no end. Literally ANYONE at this stage would be preferable. You wont win the league under Wenger, so unless his replacement got you relegated, it wouldn't matter. You wont. Arsenal do that every season when top 4 becomes tenuous. Go on a little run at the end. Only this time, because of the Wenger issues, it was too little, too late. The whole snobby thing over the manager is quite funny. Who the **** was Wenger when he came to Arsenal? No one. You will just have to pray next season that Klopp ****s up in the transfer market and Liverpool flop, and that Spurs have a Wembley nightmare beyond belief. Anything less than that will see you outside the top 4 yet again.
It may well 'revert to type' but in all honesty if it does, that will have far more to do with our Wembley form than any sudden masterstroke Wenger has to turn you into a force once more. Just like 2 seasons ago when you needed us to throw the towel in at the end of the season to finish above us, such is the gulf in quality on paper between our 2 teams (and managers, I hasten to add: albeit tentatively) that you will need us to be the masterminds of our own downfall.
This seemed to be floating around a lot as a possible solution. Wenger is a legend in his own right, but it all seems really stale now. If I was an Arsenal fan, I think the thing that would p*** me off the most is the way Wenger handled it with the press. He should have an exit plan - he's too long in the tooth now for games - and should be saying "right, I'm giving it until I'm 70 then retiring. I'll do my best to build a legacy but I implore the faithful to get behind us knowing I will do my best and that I will leave this club in the right hands." If he'd said that in Feb, all the groaning would have cleared up and Arsenal would probably have ended up in 4th, or at least closer to it than they finished. From there it would make sense to try to nurture one of the game's brighter talents to not only freshen up the coaching but also to lend itself to stability, so someone like David Wagner gives it a year in the PL with Hudds, then joins Arsenal as assistant with a view to taking the reigns a year later. Just an outside opinion.
I really feel deflated after this announcement. I am going into next season with absolutely no optimism. This is a problem. Wenger already thinks this team is 'one or two' players away from winning the league - which is just not true. I hope he's not counting kolasinac in that...because that means we'll make one more signing and that's it.
I'm also at a loss as to explain their enthusiasm at the 'genius' tactical switch to play the same system employed by Conte and soon after copied by Poch. As you say, if you traced Arsenal's form in the last 10-12 games of the season over the past decade, my money would be on them winning almost all of them, irrespective of the team or formation. As for it heralding a new era, I watched their games against Leicester and Boro and they redefined the term 'laboured win' in those games. Beat a bunch of teams with nothing left to play for, scraped past City after extra time and then when they faced a team who actually have the right personnel to play that system (us), the wheels came off. We also faced a bunch of teams with nothing left to play for towards the end of the season. We beat them 4-0,4-0, 6-1 and 7-1. (Let's not talk about the game at West Ham though ). In essence, their only truly quality performance using that system was against your hungover bunch last weekend. But hey ho, 'tis a simple life as a gooner, eh?
Nobody is surprised by this announcement. Even me, someone who loves Arsene, think this is an extension too far. Last season was painful to watch, seeing someone I love and respect being treated like a doddery fool. Whilst I don't for one minute think he is I think if we don't make some big signings fast then an already ugly mood will turn toxic. Before all that though, renew those contracts dammit.
My guess is they won't buy anyone of real note in the summer transfer market and it will lead to an even more toxic environment. Old habits die hard and our transfer windows will continue like all the rest. Wenger is already spouting the usual we are 1 or 2 players away from challenging. Absolute nonsense. But we also have the indignity of begging Ozil and Sanchez to renew their contracts during the summer, while every tom, dick and oil rich club, come sniffing for them.
Let the toxicity commence. The incompetent, arrogant and 'couldn't give a toss' attitude of the board and Wenger is mind-boggling.
I didn't say he wasn't any good, I said I don't think he's good enough for Arsenal. His record with Dortmund has been okay, but the step up to the Premier League is a big jump, as Pep is finding out. He dominated with Bayern in the Bundasliga, but he's finding life in a league with 6-8 teams who can compete much more difficult. As for the reasons you list above, they are good qualities, although I don't see the need for a DOF at Arsenal so that's not really much of a point. Also he would need to spend if was at Arsenal, there is no getting round that these days. Also is he as big a pull for players as Wenger is ? Although people like to slate him, players speak in the highest regard for Wenger and often cite it as a reason that they want to play for Arsenal. Also, there is a big question mark over Tuchel's personality and his relationship with his colleagues. He was deemed to be 'aloof' at Mainz and he fell out big time with the board and his own captain at Dortmund. There was apparently lots of in-fighting between Tuchel and senior figures at Dortmund. With even the club captain coming out to speak publicly about his criticism of the Manager's attitude. His previous Chairman had this to say about Tuchel's recent departure from Dortmund : "Taking your responsibilities is not only about the results, that's not different at Dortmund from any other sporting club. It's about basic values such as trust, respect, communication, authenticity, identification. It's about loyalty. "In the current situation, we did not see any starting point for a successful work for the future. That's why we decided not to continue with this coaching staff beyond the season 2016-17.” Possibly there is another side to that story that Tuchel has, but his acrimonious departure from Dortmund doesn't inspire confidence in the man really. If Arsenal were trying to make a change to bring stability to the club, then appointing Tuchel doesn't seem, on the evidence that it would have been a wise decision.
Two more years of pathetic performances in the league, then. At least next year we wont get knocked out in the last 16 of the CL. Our board are so ****ing small time, they have zero interest in competing for the big trophies, at this point it looks like we are stuck with Wenger until he dies, even then the board and owner might think about giving him a one year deal..
Ok I will predict what will happen- this transfer window - **** all like every year, with a scramble to buy soneone cheap on the last day once we have lost the opening game (again). Sanchez & Ozil will be sold and not replaced. the first 3 months - we will recover from opening day defeat and get to 3rd in the table the xmas period - we will go top and then use that as excuse to not buy anyone the January window - we won't buy anyone, and the window will close just as we lose 2 players for rest of season the winter months - we will have a mid season meltdown and lose 4 out of 6 games, get knocked out of League Cup get ****ed in EL (making a change from getting ****ed in CL) the last 3 months of season - we will rally and win 9 out 10 games to reach Europa league place behind Everton the month of April - we will lose in FA Cup quarter finals to Stoke the end of season - Wenger states that the team were very close to competing for PL and that Europa place is like a trophy Thoughout the whole season our fans at Emirates will boo and voice their total displeasure - and away fans will sing for Wenger to stay I am so ****ing depressed by this news that Wenger is staying
It is going to be a tricky window. We only need 2 players for the first 11, with Sead Kolasinac possibly being one of them. If we are not going to drop Cech, Mustafi, Holding, Koscielney Bellarin, Xhaka, Ramsey, Sanchez, or Ozil, that only leaves a start centre forward. We also have pretty good backups with Monreal (as CB I think he is better there), and Giroud. And then possibly depending on your mood, Chamberlain, Coquelin, Iwobi, Elneny, Welbeck, Walcott. I reckon there are also a fair number of young players already at the club that will be given a shot too. So it comes down to replacing anyone that leaves, and then trying to persuade a star player to come to the club as backup. That is always tricky and Wenger has usually done it by trying to sign a younger player. Either way, there is going to be plenty of moaning from fan because who is going to come and compete with Sanchez and Ozil for a starting slot? Where is someone like Mahrez going to get a game? We just don't play well when Sanchez plays through the middle. I think the key thing is to get a Class CF and left wing back (or 2), keep Sanchez and Ozil, and then see if there are a few up and comers that we can take a punt on. In any case, I just cant see us getting even 3 or 4 top names. i just don't think they will come to Arsenal to sit on the bench. All I can say is that 5 years ago we were worried Walcott was going to leave. Now, most people couldn't give a crap. So if you don't think things have improved then you are just deceiving yourself.
