Did mental health issues cause them to be homeless or do they have mental health issues because they are homeless?

Good question.

Homelessness will make their MH worse, some on the streets probably should be in hospital.

Trouble is charities like the big issue will not help them due to the nature of their rules.

A lot may have started on the road to homelessness through drug or alcohol abuse, some would have come from criminal roots and are incapable of looking after themselves.

Shelter to some is offered but they have to abide by certain rules ie no dogs. So they continue to choose to sleep on the street.

Others just await for the powers that be to get their act together and come out to explain the support available to some.

Maggie not do Care in the Community in the 80's?

Care in the Community was adopted as a policy in the eighties, yes. Most of the big Victorian asylums began closing in the 90s.

Blair's govt did provide a route of the street and into treatment or appropriate support for most of society's derelicts. That has now gone into reverse -there is always an increase in homelessness under a Tory government. The evidence is everywhere if you live in a big city.

For anybody to "choose to sleep on the street", the alternatives have to be pretty ****ing atrocious. Homelessness is not a lifestyle choice.

Aye something like 10 died in Belfast in a few weeks last Xmas. Only half a million live in the city too so it's not too big and most people know/live close to their families but sometimes it doesn't matter.

Some of these people want to live on the street. Scared of hostels etc.

Poor Bastards.

You have never worked with the homeless if you think a high percentage don't chose to live on the streets.

I've known cases where men will stay on the street with their dog, rather than the dog be put in a home.

I know that is hard for you to understand, but more reason why I will always have more time and respect for them, then I ever would for you....just saying likey likey

Bad enough being homeless and on the streets. Imagine having to listen politely to your ****e, in the hope of being handed 50p at the end of it (probably 20p actually).

As I said, the alternatives have to be pretty ****ing atrocious in order to make the streets look like an attractive option. Some hostels are worse than prison, and less safe, so obviously some homeless people do turn them down.

Besides, it's irrefutable that the number of hostel beds has declined massively in the last 7 years. And the number of people on the streets has gone up. This is unlikely to be through choice.

Think yer find I give them far more than 50p - and they never have to listen to me or be polite....donating is a gift to another human who owes me nothing.

Sounds like it might help you learn some respect to go live with them for night.

Clutching at words, so fickle cause he got a kicking over Europe.

Sad when Archers is desperate he uses the needy to fight his sad little ego.

I usually converse in words, Kev. I appreciate that where you come from clicks and grunts are a common method of communication, but you'll find that outside of Gillingham that won't get you very far.

What are you, Mother Theresa now?

Do you think spending one night on the street as part of some charitable activity or other gives you the vaguest ****ing insight into what it means to have nothing, and nowhere to go?

Where did I say I spent a night on the street. Guess you need to learn to read again Archers.

Sadly I just put you to shame and it irritates your own ignorance.

I thought you came from North London much like you assume where I come from.

I guess that places all Celtic supporters in Glasgow, you thick twat.
