I've just had one of them moments where your heart sinks. The other day I received a message from my friend telling me that Gary Monk will be taking over with Beattie as his right hand man. Gary Monk has just resigned as Leeds manager. I hope to God he is wrong.

Both former Saints of course, probably a case of putting 2 and 2 together and making 5.

I should add that I think that Monk is a fine young manager, but not for us,
Beatts would help our current PK crisis!...<laugh>

What makes you say Monk wouldn't be right for us? He seemed to do a good job at Leeds and was possibly sacked too early at Swansea. Played the way Southampton seemed to want to play. Experienced in the Premier League.

I wouldn't be adverse to it.

Probably not a big enough name for most of the Saints fans as MorgansBitOnTheSchneid's post testifies. I think he would be good for us too, but would he just another Puel if he doesn't break into the top seven? with the inevitable unrest from the stands.

You could be right, but I think the unrest from the fans must be ignored, if the board sack Puel and look for a replacement. Going for a "big name" doesn't really mean a lot in my view. Could end up losing that name in a season or two!

On the politics part I agree however ALL of them are the same. Even those whose "Dad was a postman" or whose "Dad was a bus driver" don;t have a clue. That is why they take advice from middle class quangos that also don;t have a clue yet think they are the all seeing I speaking on behalf of the poor downtrodden.

On the Films yes I agree.

On the football point. I hadn't made my mind up very early on Puel however the signs were worrying in the pre-season friendlies. I hadn;t made my mind up in the early season yet the early performances were disappointing. I still hadn't made my mind up by Christmas despite there being few glimpses of any change.

I had made my mind up at the end of the season though because whole season does not get forgotten because of a few games that were watchable and reaching a cup final. Puel did no different to Koeman and played the kids in the cup. If Koeman had reached the semis he might have put a good side out too. We will never know.

I'm not buying the "hounded out by the mob" sentiment. This board got rid of Adkins and they knew they would have the mob at them for that. We were (majority of us) the mob. IF the board get rid of Puel it will be a board and black box decision and not because half or less of the stadium are making bad noises and moaning.

It's nothing to do with a big name it's more down to ambition. We all crave it and Monk's name just doesn't stand out I'm afraid. On the plus side he does know Sigurdsson*.

Given it was rumoured recently that Saints 2 main transfer targets were: A centre back from Leeds and a goal scoring midfielder from Swansea it would seem that Monk might be part of the jigsaw having managed both..

I don't care about a 'big name' I just want someone who knows what they are doing! When did Saints become so full of themselves? It will be 'the club's too big for them' next.

you're right, she really shouldn't call her dad that! :) (although it is my favourite swear word and not well known out of the UK so you can use it without being beaten up!)

What is ambition? Is it to have a manager that may suit or club and stay for a while to give some stability, whilst still taking the club forward? If so, then Monk strikes me as a very determined and ambitious manager. He took on a job at one of the biggest clubs in the country despite the fact that lots of people were shaking their heads saying Leeds was a nutjob case. He has also done very well there.

Can you throw a couple of examples of ambitious managers that you think would fit?

Unfortunately we let the best example go to Everton. Just think that there is better options even at championship level than Monk.

I'd take Monk, wouldn't be my first choice but his style seems to fit the club so I'd be relatively happy with it.
