So Google - maker of Android - has now got a real hardware manufacturer.....together with all the Motorola patents! (Of which there are many). Now Google is seriously taking on Apple and its iPhone! It's war!
The question is do the Motorola patents actually give them anything of value? When was the last time they produced a decent handset? It just seems like AMG (the Mercedes tuning division) deciding they want to make their own road cars and going out and buying Reliant.
Yes - but Google now has a platform for Android. And Android code is available for developers, unlike Apple's code. The last 3 Apple machines - iPod, iPhone and iPad - are all designed for consumers: no input; no programming except for Apps; films and music tied up via iTunes (due to Steve Jobs' easiness around Hollywood). There are thousands of patents developed and held by Motorola. Many of them will be key to 'smartphones' development. For e.g. Apple is already suing Samsung for patent infringment (Samsung has both developed and produces for Apple). Phone manufacturers such as Samsung, HTC and Nokia are all supportive of the Google takeover. They can see that development of Android, on a Google platform, will be of benefit to them. It's a war between the closed/controlled world of Apple and the open/free-to-use world of Google.
