Some might have the temerity to suggest that there's a correlation between the West ripping the arse out of Iraq, Afghanistan and Syria, and the rise in fundamentalist extremists, who then peddle their doctrine of Western hatred to impressionable disaffected youngsters, who in turn then carry out the kind of atrocities that we've seen this week. Just a thought like.....

To detract from Phil for a moment, and in perhaps bad taste - is it alright to still want United to get beat tonight? I mean I could pretend not to, and they should easily win anyway, but.... well? I stand full square with the city of Manchester, but United? I'm wavering, to be honest. Maybe I need a hate injection to top up my resolution.

How does this work again, Phil?

It's opinions like that which stop important dialogue from happening in communities where the Muslim faith is dominant.

You can't whinge that "they don't fit in with Brits" or "insist on their own culture not ours" when the first thing you say to them is "you don't belong here"

Is there a serious discussion with how doctrines in the faith or at least traditions that were adopted in less tolerant countries must be let go of here? Certainly. Issues on women's rights..tolerance of secularism or other faiths..the right to criticise the whole or part of their faith by followers and those who don't follow alike...yes.

Remember it's not actually that long ago that these things had to happen within Christianity.. the move to a more tolerant rights based society separate from dictats of a religious state was a very gradual process here.

Basically a lot of that has to happen in house...a new generation of Imams who have merged Islam with British secular society.

Remember it also happened quicker in Britain because of the split from Rome. A version of Christianity was adopted that suited the needs of the British state rather than that based in a foreign country..it developed because of this.

Look at the countries that stayed with Rome: Ireland, France, Spain and you'll find it was only in the last 60 years that theological influence started to diminish over govts.

Now I'm not going to begin to understand how Imams are trained, who trains them etc but at a guess I'd say there is still a heavy influence from countries that are autocratic, male dominant etc. Rather than a creation of a distinctly British Islam in flavour

Not to start a sectarian battle, but it's no accident that Scandanavia, Germany and the UK were more progressive and liberal than Catholic countries in the 19th and 20th centuries. But it's a contrast now that Eire seems light years more liberal than Ulster, that still has conservative, Presbyterian figures and influences. Point is, religions can develop.

Edit - that was meant to be 18th and 19th century.

I still want united to get beat. <ok>

All the best for the city of Manchester but these days club location doesn't equal fanbase very often.

Sorry. Just found it ironic. My grammar is terrible when I'm typing in a hurry, but I always double check when calling someone a 'dummy'. <laugh>

Yeah. As said, I was wavering, but reading Phil has reminded me that irrational, blind hate outweighs any logical compassion.

And I ****ing hate Mongino. <eek>

    Practical.

They have way more money than anyone else now that Chelsea and City have passed the crazy spendthrift stage.

I don't want them getting the advantage of Champions League on top of that.
