It would be a risk, certainly, but I reckon that SW calculates his risks very carefully and he brought Wagner to Huddersfield from Dortmund's U23 side (Farke replaced him). The German league is different in that the U23 teams play in a lower league against non U23 sides. He did have 6 years managing the first team of SV Lippstadt 08 in the lower league. As Wiki tells us: "Farke began his managerial career with the club with whom he spent most of his playing career, SV Lippstadt 08. He was in charge for 6 years before accepting the opportunity to take charge of Borussia Dortmund II, the reserve side of well respected German club Borussia Dortmund." Not all that different from Lambert when he came to us. EDIT: Snap DH! Wrote this before seeing yours.
It's just a very risky chain of command based on Webber having been successful with one appointment at huddersfield with Wagner, followed if true by a risky appointment of Farke. I don't know if they have an exceptional set up at Dortmund or are exceptional at scouting but it just seems weird that he has revisited them for consecutive coaches. 6 years at SV Lippstadt 08 does not suggest to me a manager of exceptional talent on some metioric rise. Lets not forget it is only the u23 team that he was managing, if that is equivalent to the forth tier then how would we feel if we were recruiting Derek Adams from Argyle? 2nd in the 4th tier surely he must be as good? Don't get me wrong, I hope he will do well. It has got to be better than the same old managerial merry go round, but Webber has proven little so far, the Jury is out on him and his appointment who ever it ends up being. Bah!
I agree that there are risks, GM - there always are with any new manager. Webber thinks German coaches are light years ahead of English managers and I presume that is what the Board was told when he was brought in. I seem to recall that Lambert completed his coaching credentials in Germany, presumably for the same reason. Like Derek Adams (who's done a great job at Argyle by the way). he had only managed in the lower leagues in Scotland and England when he came to us, but he fitted our needs perfectly. I don't know much about Farke, but presumably that's why we've gone to this new SD/HC set-up instead of a non-football CEO making such decisions. I prefer the new system, but it has yet to be proved for sure. The difference is that the HC will have the support of the SD, something AN could have done with IMO.
Ditto David Wagner and he hasn't done so bad with Udders, he hasn't even been appointed yet and alreadythere are those slagging him off Would you really rather a journeyman Manager with several sackings under his belt ?
I would take Allardyce expect promotion and survival. It's what he does. This German guy hasn't done anything yet
Can't say if I am happy or let down by this. As I dunno who he is. At the moment, I am more feeling as my initial instinct: Dortmund do things right, all through the levels. He's coming from a good pedigree. He sounds like he's a highly respected coach. As people say: Wagner, Klopp, Wolf. A good trend of coaches moving on from their youth system. You can't say it is therefore a rule for all their coaches. Not all of them will become successful managers. Also, I like how Webb comes across. I think he's good. I'm sure he would have got a good review about him from Wagner. Only time will tell. I will await an interview or press conference. See if he can speak English first. That would be a start. See how he comes across, what his philosophy is. Also, will eagerly await the kind of players he/and Webb will target. I dunno if it's a good signing or not at the moment.
I don't think any of us do, FML, considering we'd never heard of him 3 days ago. JMF suggested that he prefers a 4-1-4-1 formation and I've been trying to work out how our existing players would fit into that. Howson would probably be the one most effected, but then he has played at AM or WR in the past. We have a lot of other options across the 4 behind the striker and Farke is said to like to adjust the tactics to suit the opposition so that could be an advantage as he likes an attacking formation with a strong defense behind. Perhaps we'll all feel more confident once we begin to build that strong defense behind!
Interesting note of caution maybe, when AN came to us, we were told he favoured a 4-1-4-1 set up and we know damn well that he liked to tinker according to the opposition! ????
Fair enough Dave, but I wasn't intending to spread alarm, just curiosity about where we go from here if it is Farke. I don't recall AN favouring a 4-1-4-1, but I'll take your word for it. Personally, I don't have any problem with adjusting players and formations to counter the opposition. For me it's intelligent tactical football in the modern game. Just to put the record straight, FML, he was the manager at Lippestadt for 6 years. It's only at Dortmund he's been working with the second team.
I think you're right to be cautious FML and I guess we won't now have too long to wait for it all to be confirmed. IMO, I'm more excited than cautious and at least he should be in place and getting to know the players as soon as pre-season training begins and hopefully start recruiting players to 'shore up' our woeful defence. Time will tell.
It's certainly an Interesting time. I'm excited to see what happens from now til the season kicking off. I'm glad we have finally signed a manager. The way it was going, I thought we wouldn't get anyone until weeks before the season kicks off. I'm guessing we will see a flood of foreign players coming in to fill the "15 players leaving". Again, another risk. But again, if it works like Huddersfield, then perfect.
Rick, not intended as a doom monger, just pointing out the similar styles, I think AN used 4-1-4-1 at Accies but not so much with us. With the correct players 4-1-4-1 can quickly change on the pitch to 4-3-3 or even 4-4-2 to cope with the situations that arise during the game. I'm far more excited than worried!
He hasn't actually signed FML. SW said that he thought we'd work from a squad of around 18 players with new players coming in. We currently have a squad of 20 senior players so, yes, a few more may leave, but nothing like 15. That's the modern game, Dave. People talk about formations but these are always fluid according to the situation.
Just read this on the EDP website - “But he will focus on youth development, try to cut down the number of goals conceded and a bit like (Jurgen) Klopp and Wagner try and bring that attacking style. It is a very good fit but whether he can deliver is the question? "Farke guided Dortmund’s U23s to a second-placed finish in the fourth tier of German football this season. “His Dortmund side only conceded 25 goals so his reputation is high. He has got them playing attacking football with an extremely solid defence. They were only beaten once at home in two years,” said McFadyean, speaking to BBC Radio Norfolk. “What English clubs are looking for, in my view, is talent and there is bags of that in German football. “I have just watched Dortmund’s Under-19s beat Bayern this week to win the national championship and believe it or not 34,000 were there. What the English clubs want is pure ability and when it comes to bringing out the best in young players and nurturing players perhaps that is something the English clubs have neglected over the years. They have tended to go for quick and easy imports.” Can someone please remind me - when last did WE have a 'really solid defence???' If he's going to bring on the 'youff', he'll certainly get my vote and also ILD's (remember him???), as I know he's been to more under 23 games than I have.
