Funnily enough Northolt, it was only midweek games I went to last season. But, what with the better perspective 'n' all.......
Of course everyone's opinion is valid, as long as they have actually seen the game through being there, TV , net etc. Only thing I would say is that there is nothing like being there - next best is watching with fellow fans preferably in a pub. I spent years living outside UK ( before the net, Sky etc) and it was horrible - was forced to get a season ticket at another club to get the buzz of live footy ( ok it was AC Milan with Gullit, Van Basten etc) I was there on Saturday and expect to see us a lot this year - sympathies to those who cannot make it.
Thatâs my opinion Joey. Itâs quite ignorant to give out your own opinion and then when someone disagreeâs you get upset and call them ignorant. Not going to waste my time trying to change your opinion because your minds made up. But next time your watching on the tv and they cut away from the game (so you canât see whats happening) to show a shot of a manager whoâs travelled hundreds of miles to watch the game at the ground and not on television, you might start to think about their reasons for making that trip.
You're the exact person this article was aimed at Dowie. I'm not saying you can see everything on TV, but there's a great deal you can't see at the ground, wherever you sit. Even then you don't have the benefit of replays, close-ups, etc. Within seconds on TV you know whether it was a penalty, offside, free-kick, red card, crossed the line.... And as far as managers at games goes, I'd say it was more aesthetic than anything. Capello goes to dozens of games a year to pick the same side we'd all pick from watching Sky and MOTD. At the end of the day, it pretty much boils down to who knows their football and who doesn't, but everyone is entitled to an opinion, wherever they watched the game. And nothing does beat watchiing the Rs live, I'm not disputing that.
But you go to the match and see everything, including everything off the ball that TV doesn't pick up and then 2 hours later you can go home and watch replays if you like and see the same stuff that people have seen on TV. You obviously get a better overall view of the game/players etc by being there watching it live. Undisputable really.
Clearly I disagree Madge, having watched countless games, not just at QPR, where I've not been able to see what the hell is going on - often not even knowing who's scored until I've heard it on the stadium tannoy. If you watch a game live and then a full re-run on TV then clearly you've seen as much as anybody is going to see, but we're getting away from the point of this thread. I was merely saying you don't have to be at the ground to have an opinion, despite many on here using the "we were there, you weren't" argument tp add weight to their views.
I agree you don't have to be at the game to have an opinion. But to have an opinion worth listening to...........................!!!!!!! (Just joking buddy).
Fortunately I'm down the other end of Ellerslie from the extended gantry, so I get an unrestricted views of the stadium stanchions...
I live in Ipswich (about 60 miles from London) and must confess that I'm constrained on going to games (a couple of hundred quid for me and the girlfriend to go to a match). I could probably go more but the expense of just my transport and ticket (if I went when the missus is watching her beloved Ipswich) is the equivalent of two nights out with the lads (ie two weekends bound at home) when the pennies are tight. I try to coincide trips to see friends with the opportunity to see the Rs (hence seeing the likes of Cambridge or Cheltenham when we were in the lower leagues) to justify it as an expense. Hope to see us away at Man City and catch a game or two at Loftus Road this season. As you can see from the above, I am not as hardy, dedicated or wealthy as some (I think most are purely dedicated) but am a supporter nonetheless. When it comes to matches, I tend to keep my views to a minimum in favour of those who are there because you do get to see the whole picture (away from the cameras). This includes players off the ball movement and workrate etc. Commentators watch the games and use the TV for replays - that speaks volumes about how best to absorb a game. I'll continue to post my opinions on all matters general and welcome the insight of those who have the chance to watch live.
