Not going to be popular with some Hoops fans but is Aly Faurlin really as good as we've been made to think he is? On old 606 I'd commented that he'd gone missing for long periods of games and Derry was the real heart of the midfield. Sadly Derry looked off the pace against Bolton but at least he was trying. I can't recall anything significant Faurlin did during the game. I think we want to believe he is a genius but in reality he was an average Championship player and wouldn't make the squad of most Premiership teams. Early days but unless Faurlin picks up the pace my belief that he is out of his depth at this level won't change. I can hear the "you don't know what you are talking about" comments being typed already!!! Bring it on. Up the R'sssssss!!!!!!
Of course he's not as good as some of the blurry-eyed mad-men on here would have you believe but what I always seen in him was potential. But to compare him to Ray Wilkins as someone did is silly at this stage. He could become a top player but now's the time to do it.
He had a poor game on Sat - has plenty of potential but sometimes lacks confidence - we need a further creative midfielder so that NW can alternate - Buzz is not a playmaker
Derry was one of the best players saturday. Its one game...who can blame the players? They got nothing on sat Davies elbows push and foul and got away with it. Tool
Ali will come good. Certainly has the talent. Wouldnt hurt to strenghen in his and Derry position though so it gives them both something to think about.
One game, come on! Yes we might have overrated him a slight bit, but even then he's more than good enough. He was outmuscled on sat, his passing was a bit overambitious at times. But after all the knocks and passing mistakes he was still asking for the ball and making himself open for a pass. AND that for me says all you need to know about the lad. He will come good, believe you me
Faurlin is definitely good enough and if anything he is underated. As barely got a mention by media last season. Along with Bothroyd, Adel, DJ and Kenny he is one of the few genuine Premieship quality players. that we have
Could understand if you'd posted this after 10-15 games and he'd been playing badly, but posting it after one game means I can't take you or the thread seriously.
Disgraceful comment that could be levelled at any player in any team that just lost 0-4 at home ... Fickle this team can play at this level ... I will save loads of these comments when we win and keep a clean sheet .. Fickle fickle people
You're right Grove imho. I think the £3m tag subsequently revealed as a Paladini lie, and the 'we've bought an Argy' thing has fooled a lot of us into seeing stuff that just ain't there with Ali. He actually cost less than 600k which has been about the mark given his actual performances. Maybe he's closer to £1m now... ? Okay Championship player who's certainly improved a bit with experience but nothing great. I reckon the prem's gonna find him out. From what I've seen he's about the same level in his position as Bradley Orr is in his. As it happens, I like both guys for their honesty and diligence but don't see either as players to worry opponents. There's no doubt that Ali has a level of quiet charisma which I and most others find attractive, but an effective prem anchor man? Nah!
No its not disgraceful DT we all have our own opinions - I for one thought Alberti had loads of potential but it seemed no-one else did! Faurlin is learning. Its a step up to the Prem and he like the rest of team and Warnock; need to suss that out and grow into it. Look at Jonathon Walters - a Warnock target - he stepped up from Ipswich to Stoke and now looks the business. Sadly, like a fine wine, it takes time to develop the nuances and experience
There really is a huge chasm of different opinions about Derry's performance. I agree with WBA that despite busting a gut for 90 minutes he looked well off the pace for most of the game. Our entire midfield including Faurlin and Taarabt seem to have missed the training session that tells you one touch football is very much the name of the game in the PL. Even if you can't play that way yourself you should at least be aware that the opposition will. Only Smith seemed to have much of an understanding but he faded badly. I still think Faurlin can cut it at this level but he is now 25 so definitely not inexperienced as some seem to think. He needs to adapt his game quickly.
As others have said, time will tell, but I must admit that I am not convinced that he will prove to be Premiership material.
I think it's a bit harsh to judge him unworthy of the premier league after just one game, especially as it was a game in which the whole team badly underperformed. I actually thought he played pretty well for the first half hour, although I'll admit that he was suckered into giving away a few silly free kicks, and in the second half he seemed to disappear completely, and probably should have been brought off. As someone else on here mentioned though, we are very short of options in the middle of the pitch. I thought Derry was our best player.
Nope I think its crazy to even think it in my opinion. We can play at this level and AF will be a star and i am pleased in a way that we are already written off but the quality will come through.
I wanted to say it last season, well over rated IMO doesn't do enough stroking a few balls around isn't enough and useless in front of goal apart from 1 occasion when he scored last season. He is average at best. Take off your rose coloured specs before throwing any abuse my way.
