Yep. Course, he eventually did get to ManU by 1974, but not before English defences had kicked the living daylights out of him. Busby wanted him 5 or 6 seasons earlier when he was at his peak. They were prepared to break the bank to have him too, but we were having none of it. A contract meant a contract in those days.

  3. Ron Davies was a super player and had a very sad end of life, alone and reclusive in New Mexico!! Thanks for the pic - which also features two of our own greats no longer with us: Cyril Knowles & Dave Mackay. More positively, the No 5 I think is Mike England who looked in fine fettle yesterday at WHL!! <ok>

Predecessor actually. Martin Chivers was born in Southampton and came up through the Youth System. He went to my school, in fact. He was the big striker until Ron Davies came along from Norwich City, then they played alongside each other for a couple of seasons. We got a few big scoring victories from those two. Then Chiv got injured and a young Mick Channon started to appear, and Martin wanted to move on. The club were OK about that, as Channon was easily ready, so you folks got Big Chiv for £125,000 and we got Frank Saul in return, and the rest is history.

Ron's end wasn't quite as bad as that, though he did live in an RV for several years. Said he preferred it, and wasn't that run down. Anyway, I happen to know that his last few years were a lot better as I was part of the team who set up a charity for him. Saints fans came up with over £20,000, plus a free new set of gnashers [dentist fan living in the States]. We paid off what remained of his RV and he was OK until he died. We wanted to do more but Ron was a private and proud chap.

I'll level with you. If you highlight anything you can find after the two asterisks at the bottom of that photo you'll see my thoughts on your players.

Found another for you. Sorry about the quality, but this is an actual print from the era. I had wondered if this was our old Dell, but could never remember the hoops on the wall. Then I looked it up and it's definitely WHL. So here's to your old lady. Note the formal wear and ties. Obviously we're in the era of rattles, applause and not an F or C in hearing distance, unless someone was saying 'football club'. How about that pitch.?

Players are Mike England, Ron Davies and No.3 Denis Hollywood. Is that a corner for you or for us.? Look at those sideburns.!

Holy smoke.I forgot Frankie Saul! Always one of my favourites.Always a trier, never a world beater. But I saw him score an absolute bomb for us in a semi final against Notts forest. What a screamer...and it got us to Wembley.....where he did it again ,scoring the winner against CHELSEA!!!!

Thought we might have seen him there yesterday. According to his wiki page when he got sent of against Burnley in 1965, he was the first Spurs player to be sent off in a league match since 1928. Jesus, he certainly started something.

I remember Spurs playing a friendly against a Hungarian team. This player chopped Mo Norman and finished Mo's career.......and the foreigner was laughing at what he had done. If Norman had been able to play on ,I wouldn't have fancied the player's chances in this world!
    The ref was quiet,too!

I've decided today to end my long term exile from the board. It had been a while since I last posted, and while I occasionally checked in, it's only been the last few months that I've come back to full time lurking.

It's nice to be back and I look forward to the discussions to come #COYS
