I must admit, I find the people who say Jay Rod isn't worth the money without ever having watched him play incredibly frustrating. He is a brilliant player that is an improvement on what we have already. More importantly, he is still young and with Connolly getting older and Barnard not necessarily good enough to play in the Premiership, he would be an excellent acquisition. You have to understand that Adkins and Cortese are building a team for the future, not just temporarily plugging gaps in our squad with journeymen or loan signings from Manure's/Arsenal's youth academy.
According to radio Solent we have had a bid accepted for Jay rod for 5.5m Can't see anywhere else reporting it though!
OK, when did you hear this, because this news was first reported here at 11.36am and then I listened to the midday news and there wasn't a sniff..?
I must admit. i find the people who say Barney can't cut it in the prem quite frustrating especially as he hasn't kicked a ball in the championship yet.
I definitely think that 5.5m is too much to be spending on one player. Forest have just signed miller and derbyshire for a combined fee of around 2m. Although Jay Rod maybe better than both of those players, surely it would make more sense to be looking into the reserves of prem clubs where there will be players of similar ability but for half the price? for example i would imagine simon cox from west brom would be available for around 4m max, and from what ive seen is a very promising player
Exactly. I do have a little man crush on Barney as he busts a bollock for the shirt every time he plays. If he doesn't score then is tenacity makes goals for others. Give him a chance. I'm not against J Rod coming but the fee is steep no matter what people say.
Jay Rod is class and the sort of player who would thrive on good service. He's still young and would be the clinical finisher we've needed for ages. I'm sceptical of big money moves at this level, but would make an exception for this one. He'd score 20+ goals.
To be honest we do have a clinical finisher. He's called Rickie Lambert, David Connolly, Adam Lallana, etc... From what I've seen Jay Rodriguez would make a very good addition. Being young and bought for high money, he's going to partner Lallana and a few others into the Premiership to build a team there, stay and progress. That must be Cortese's/Adkins' aim.
I said "not necessarily good enough" and of course this is all just my opinion. You have to admit, Jay Rod is five years younger, already proven at this level and touted by many journos as a future England star. I was simply pointing out that he would be an improvement on Barnard. Oh, and I never stated Barnard wouldn't be good enough for League One, in fact I think he can do a pretty good job in the Championship, but the Prem is a big jump from League One in two years.
I don't think Rodriguez will be joining sadly. We've already had £4.5million bid rejected by Burnley and they've said that he's not for sale. The only way I could see him leaving them is if someone came in with a ridiculous offer like £6.5/7million which nobody would pay.
Unfortunately, Matt Paterson's injured at the moment which is why they would probably be unlikely to let Rodriguez leave without a fight - funny how things come back to bite you isn't it!
Granted he could be a great player but i think it's an expensive gamble personally. But hey that's what makes this board fun, as we saints fans love a debate.
Then you and a few others are exceptions. I know several people who expressed the view that he wouldn't do a job for Saints, when he was signed. They still maintain it, though their criticism has jumped a division now. Hey, I wasn't that convinced myself initially. He satisfied me that I was wrong, so I'm cutting him some slack now.
It's Martin Paterson that's injured, our ex-striker Matt is currently on loan at Hamilton Academical, I made the same mistake myself when I first saw his name
Well i'll be damned, there I was thinking he'd snuck a move to Burnley! Why I didn't think of Martin Paterson, I don't know, thinking of it, he's been there ages hasn't he?
True. If we sign Rodriguez I'd be ecstatic but I'm equally confident in Lambert/Connolly/Guly/Barnard to fire us up the league. I know the types, the same people that sighed when we brought on Forte when 2-0 down against MK Dons because he hadn't scored in the 7 minute cameos the weeks before and look how that game turned out.
Yeah, he's in his fourth season at the club now. Apparently Burnley are set to sign a couple of forwards today in Danny Ings and Zavon hines so I'm not sure if that shows they are willing to sell.
If we're talking £5.5m, I'd rather have Maynard for that money? Surely Bristol City would accept that for him considering he's in the last year of his contract?
