I listened to Graham Norton’s radio show this morning (from Kiev, where he is doing the commentary for Eurovision) and apparently the Italian entry was the favourite (has been viewed 10 million times on You Tube) until they saw that it was being staged with somebody dressed in a gorilla costume.

As I gather it, the current favourite is Portugal because they have a simple, straight-forward song with no gimmicks (Norton played it and it sounds okay). He also played the Romanian entry, which is some sort of yodelling rap, but will the voters go for that sort of thing? We know that the voting has become very regionalised over the years since more countries have been allowed to enter.

I hope that there is not a political backlash in the voting because I like the UK entry “Never Give Up On You”, sung by Lucie Jones, but I fear that she could get nil points because of Brexit. Her song was co-written by former Danish Eurovision winner Emmelie de Forest (“Only Teardrops” was a worthy winner), now a show veteran at the age of 24, younger than Lucie! She is on 18th – the same slot Emmelie won from.

No Ste, I absolutely hate it nowadays. Used to have some good stuff on it in the old days, i.e. decent music, now it's the Eurovision Noise Contest?

<laugh> I don't watch the event anymore either but I'd say if you looked back thru the history books you would do well to see the last nation over 12/1 to win. The bookies have these mug events sewn up and you would be crazy to waste even 5 pound on it. I'd give ya 50,000/1 Austria to be top 10 and I haven't heard one song in it.

Okay, this comes with a wealth warning; I cannot say that I am going to back it myself having looked at it:

    Thirsk 6:45 – Mutadaffeq

This used to be trained by Kevin Prendergast for Sheikh Hamdan but it was evidently sold on and has run three times on the Newcastle polytrack for new connections and remains a maiden. The turf form from Ireland gives me little grounds for confidence this evening but the source gave me a 14/1 winner earlier in the week (each-way) that I gave no chance, kept to myself and never had a penny on. I note that it has shortened substantially in the betting, although that might be the four non-runners.

Fine ride by Egan. Most jockeys struggle to change whip hand, he did it twice in the last furlong.

Azerbaijan 150/1 ew for Eurovision, back them every year and have done for the last 5 or 6 years since I got really really drunk one year and for some reason found it an hilarious word to say.

It's still a fun word to say and I'm as sober as a Muslim at Friday prayers
