I took the day off work and was so drunk that night but had started to sober up by the penalties. After we won, I spent all-night getting slaughtered all over again. My mate caught Chris Hughton's shinpad when he threw it into the crowd which has pride of place to this day in his house. I think I spent the night sleeping with it. Nothing sexual. I can't say the same about the time I worked in a bank in Stoke during University summer hols and was presented with a cheque from Gary Winston Lineker. Before that went into clearing.......
There's a great article on The Mail website (I know but recently they have been mellowing towards us) with some tremendous old photographs. Highly recommended! http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/fo...Lane-picture-special-Tottenham-leave-WHL.html
Memories of a very special player who won't be gracing WHL on Sunday. Unbelievable as it may seem, I had actually forgotten just how good Gazza was - and his pace and pure class even at the end of his career is a joy to behold. Not bad for a CM!! Enjoy!!
The Indy's got a pretty good list of the ten best matches in the history of WHL http://www.independent.co.uk/sport/...-the-history-of-white-hart-lane-a7732801.html There's also a gallery on the site of George Osborne's Evening Standard...but you run the risk of constant nagging about using AdBlocker on their site
How do we get another Gazza? Also, can someone show this to Eriksen, so he can remember how to take a free-kick? I think he's forgotten.
Gazza : http://www.tottenhamhotspur.com/news/the-lane-the-finale-paul-gascoigne-120517/ As I long suspected. The football was everything to him, and once it was gone, there would be a massive hole in his life to fill.
http://talksport.com/football/revea...ane-appearances-tottenham-player-170511238627 If this is accurate (yes, I know it's 'TalkShite') then think there will be some general surprise!! Rather kills the 'sicknote' tag......
For fellow fans who loved the Shelf, an appreciation from. Tony Evans........ http://www.standard.co.uk/sport/foo...ne-londons-most-hostile-stadium-a3537971.html A very good and knowledgeable piece by a true fan. I recall our cup quarter finals against Liverpool and United in 1980 and 1979 respectively as being incredibly noisy, hostile and packed beyond words. When Ossie scored against United it was like trying to stand up in a hurricane. Every fan has their favourite era. Mine would be 77-84. You could sense that something was coming. Relegation in '77 had stripped us of some of the old expectations and some fans who could be negative. There was a real sense of us building a team of home grown players - Hughton, Miller, Hoddle, Perryman, Brooke, Hazard, Falco. Some of the others were bargain buys like Roberts and Galvin. Great days at WHL even in defeat. I remember a fabulous game against Forest in 78/79. We completely outplayed them but didn't have the forwards to score and lost 3-1, I think. But a great game of football and a fabulous atmosphere. Happy days!
Darren Anderton played 499 club games in his career, as well as 30 appearances for England. He had a few seasons were he didn't play that much, but it's quite an exaggerated reputation.
For comparison's sake... Michael Owen: 482 club games, 89 games for England Paul Gascoigne: 468 club games, 57 games for England Ledley King: 321 club games, 21 games for England Andy Carroll*: 271 club games, 9 games for England Owen Hargreaves: 261 club games, 42 games for England Daniel Sturridge*: 254 club games, 25 games for England Jack Wilshere*: 200 club games, 34 games for England Jason Cunny: 146 club games, 0 games for England
I was at that game standing pretty much below that camera. I haven't seen those goals in years. I was 18 and beautiful. I wanna go back!!!!!
I was there too, mate - as I was with this one!! Steve Perryman was popular enough before this night, but this took him into Legend status!!
I missed that one as my dad was working. However, I was at both legs of the final against Wolves. One memory that seems very strong is the absolute silence when Anderlecht scored in the '84 final. I was in the lower tier of the East Stand slightly in the Park Lane half and I heard the ball hit the net it was so quiet. Great moments would have to include Stevie P's goal against Hull in '78. Without that goal........
