I was disappointed that this kind of stuff wasn't left until the season the ended. There should be a singular focus at this time of the season, when there's a chance, no matter how small, of winning a trophy.

I agree. I suppose given that for many (the football league) the season is over and signings are now being made it is natural. I think the season end should all be brought into line with each other but that's another point.
I kind of assumed Spurs would keep everyone but not so sure now when the situation is presented like that. Could be all media ****e though

Interesting article which raises some good points. How will Levy manage the wage demands if your best players are suddenly offered £200k per week at another club ? And if one gets it, what about the others ? Also if you bring anybody in how will you do that without paying them vastly more than what your current players are being offered.

Spurs have done well to keep a lid on their wage bill, but if you want to compete at the top, then you can't continue with that and expect to keep your best players. Unfortunately in this game, as much as us fans would like to see club loyalty as the priority, cash is king.

Along with the bill for the new stadium, I think Spurs will struggle to match the wages of the big clubs.

Joe Lewis and Daniel Levy see Spurs as very much an investment company as part of ENIC.
I can't see either of them sinking their own money into financing the next step.

I think you're right, especially with the new stadium cost. I can see this team gradually being sold off for big money and replaced with academy players who will also be sold off if they reach the same level. If that happens i can't see Pochettino sticking around for too long either.

It happened with us at Arsenal and without wanting to sound like I'm rubbing it in, we are a much bigger club than Spurs. When we moved from Highbury our players were on £20k-£40k per week and we had a lot of success with players who we'd signed for a song and without breaking the bank in terms of wages. Along with having to finance the £390m stadium build, we also had to try and find a way of staying competitive without doing a Chelsea or City and throw a bottomless pit of money at the squad.

For us that meant selling our best players, raising income from transfers and keeping the wage ceiling from ever increasingly raising. We invested in youth and whilst a lot of people like to slate Wenger for those years, he still managed to get those young teams battling for the league, FA cup and qualifying for the Champions League every season.

Today, in trying to keep up with the likes of City and Chelsea, we're now looking at paying Ozil and Sanchez £280k per week to keep them at the club. Because players like that (although they along with most Arsenal players have under performed this season) can simply tell their agents to find them a club who will pay it.

At Spurs, whilst you've had two very good seasons (albeit without any silverware) it's kind of opened a Pandora's box. Players like Alli, Kane, Erikson, Dier, Lloris, Walker will now be on the radar and even if offers come in that Levy decides to refuse, it has the effect as the article points out, that they can then go back to Levy and say 'I've been offered £250k at Real Madrid, what are you going to do to keep me at Spurs ?'

Can't see Spurs pushing on. This was their chance to win a trophy and they've failed.

Think Alli leaves this summer. Probably Eriksen too.

It was a very slim chance because instead of spending £48 mio on a top notch striker we decided to spend it on Janssen and Sissoko. Therefore, when Kane got injured the first time we didn't have a ready-made replacement. With 2 top-class strikers your options increase exponentially: play with 2 if chasing a game, alternate them, bring one on from the bench if the other is having a bad day. I said at the front end of the season that the money should have been better spent.

Not suggesting that bud. You're moving into a big stadium, you'll get to Chelsea/Arsenal/United level one day but I think you needed to win trophies this season to keep this squad together.

Besides. You'll probably get 100m for Eriksen and Alli. Reinvest that and you could strike lucky.

What the Spurs have accomplished the past 6 seasons within there net transfer over that period is anything but lucky , it's financial resolve , a good scouting system and great at negotiation player movement . The " Big " boys could learn a lesson in frugality IMO

Depends on what you call a " Major Trophy " . The FA Cup is a joke to me . " Big clubs " play there fringe players till they know that can't win League and if they are still in the cup they go all guns blazing . Over the past 6 seasons Arsenal have 10 more points than Spurs , less than a win a season in points while spending 200 times more money on net transfers of players . Money well spent :)

So it's a joke of a trophy, yet your club Swansea would give anything to win it.

And Arsenal have spent 200 times more than what Spurs have on players ?! What the **** have you been sniffing Roofie ? <laugh>

Spurs have had a ridiculously low net spend since Pochettino has been there and have the youngest squad in the premier league but to take the next step and stay there, as Piskie mentioned, will require more reinforcements and a huge jump in wages. This will be sustainable once the stadium is paid off but will mean some pain in the short-term. Pochettino has performed miracles over the last 2 seasons and Spurs have gained more points over that period than other team. Alas, that doesn't win you any kind of trophy but as a fan of over 40 years it's great to see us actually challenging on a consistent basis considering where we were not that long ago.
