    Cropredy Notes

And these are all performers I am unfamiliar with except Horslips, without whom I would not have gone.

The day threatened rain, but we didn't get any - so that was good - and I got a little burnt on my nose and forehead. There were loads of food stalls selling everything from buffalo burgers through vegan feasts to Goan fish curries made with Cornish fish. Loads of hippy clothing stalls and a few musical instrument stalls, the obligatory CD stand and a very large bar.

    Anywat to the bands:
Richard Digance Very amusing, he did get a huge ovation for his song about soldiers in Afghanistan.
The Shee A six piece girl band playing celtic type music, very good and easy on the eye. I think they make very good Sunday morning music.
The Blockheads Even without Ian Dury the Blockheads are something to behold. No new material but that's not what you want from the Blockheads.
Lau A very competent three piece, accordion, guitar and violin, They have won a heap of prizes and you could see why.
Horslips For me the best band of the day. Horslips played to their rockier side if that's possible without any of the earlier urse songs.
Badly Drawn Boy Pleasant enough, but he had problems following Horslips (a fully electric folk rock group against one man and a guitar), The archetypal miserable Manc and he was, the fact he was born in Dunstable doesn't help him.
And so to Fairport Convention It was their party and someone should have told them, pedestrian to a degree I haven't seen before and did they need to have so many dedications. The redeaming feature was they played all of Babbacombe Lee.

My impression of Fairport Convention is that they have brilliant days and mediocre days. If they are really up for it great, if not you find yourself waiting for something out of the ordinary to happen.

I wasn't sure what to expect with FC, but if there are bands I'd like to see next year I'd go back.

Brag, you are making me feel old. As a student we put on Richard and Linda Thompson. The support act was Richard Digence, who said he wouldn't share a dressing room with then as they objected to alcohol. We only had a very small room available but he was happy. I ended up playing football with him most of the afternoon. I hope he is unhappy come Tuesday evening, though. He is an avid West Ham supporter.

Just for the record, Linda Thompson was lovely, and Richard was somewhat remote until I dazzled him with my amateur light show. Why I was doing the lights is something I don't remember. It was the first and last time I've done that.

Where is she, the one with the whisk? My bottle is emptied, so it is time for my nightcap of malted milk.

Don't know yet who won the cycle race as the finish is a mile from my house. Five riders disappeared up the hill from here on the final lap and then it is almost a mile of downhill. The charge round the bends would have been at 60 kmh. Hope they made it to the finish which is just past the cemetery and close to the bar.
