Been to Oppy a couple of times, the wood part was out of bounds as still too much ordnance about and some local landowner in no hurry to open it up. Did not see a soul on the streets either time. Very quiet place, can't say felt the gratitude and hospitality vibe you feel in Belgium. If visiting Menin gate, check out the names of all the East Yorkshires on there, up the central stairs.Ditto Thiepval.
Two and a shared one, all on the same site now. My sheds were a bit too good though. They were ****ed over too many times to bother myself with.
I lived just up the road at Windsor so met a busload of Airlie Birds at their hotel and then went to the match , with pubs and hotel later. The only supporter rivalry I saw was them trying to out-sing each other, which was done with great humour. Early on there was a handbag stolen which ws a huge loss for the couple, but all RL supporters in the hotel bar (more than just Hull & KR) had a selfless whip round that went a very long way to making the weekend right again. For most of the people in that hotel, Wembley weekend was an every year event run through a Didlum during the year.
No it wasn't My wife celebrated being wed to me for 31 years by taking me out for a meal. Which I paid for. Over 31 years.
Our 2 underachieving RL clubs playing each other at Wembley was one of the worst things that ever happened to our city. It condemned us to be percieved as a small geraghtyesque rugby league town for a whole generation. 28 years it took before we finally walked out into the sun at the new Wembley and regained our rightful place as a football city.
Yes we lost a generation (or 2) from 1978 to 2002, and the damage is still evident. Kidults in Hull shirts who support LFC, all the dysfunctional types who support local RL, but support global football. (WHY?) The loutish behaviour of many local RL fans on their travels to the hamlets and backwaters of the North of England also dragged our city's name through the mud. We are hanging onto the new generation by our fingertips as our owners use them in their war with the fanbase/council.
I was at the game and to this day and remmber the goal - but have never forgotten or forgiven the Hull FC fans at the Brentford match - no respect .I would never have behaved that way towards them ,Still want them to win on behalf of the city - maybe that's the difference . Still following the tigers and alway will UTT
