I wasn't talking about diving when there is contact. I said blatant diving, aka no contact at all. Still don't agree with the contact side either, the body language tells the story; if you are truly fouled you either go down like a so of spuds or stumble along trying to stay on your feet before hitting the ground. You don't flop down like you've been drinking John Smiths

There doesn't have to be contact for there to be a penalty. But referees wouldn't give a penalty if you hurdled an opponent, stayed on your feet and lost the ball, as a result players are forced to go down or lose any sort of advantage they've gained from beating the opponent to the ball.

 

Agree with that. Referees need to grow a pair (more so since they're pretty brave to take up the role in the first place) and start giving fouls and penalties when contact isn't made (aka the players hurdles the challenge but the defender fails to get near the ball or shows intent)

 

Coutinho Vs Palace showed perfectly why players don't try to stay on their feet. A chance at an off balance shot in a crowded penalty area Vs a shot from 12 yards against just the keeper if you go down. No brainer.

 

That really should have been called back, by all means play advantage but if that advantage is snuffed out by weight of numbers then pull the game back and give the foul.

 

Apparently getting a shot off is an advantage, the referee didn't take into account the amount of numbers around him and the fact he hadn't fully recovered his balance.

 

It is an advantage (in some cases), if he had managed to pass the ball to a team mate in a good position then the ref would have been right, the fact that his only real option was to try a shot through a crowd meant it should have been pulled back.
