OK, I could have put, doing a Norwich. I just didn't want Norwich in my title.

I'm just thinking if a club wants to be the position of gaining a promotion one season after the previous. Look at Norwich [there's hardly anyone else]. Some of their team have gone with them, from League One through to The Premiership. They've made a few additions, but they haven't been able to slowly build the team. Consequently, I'm confident [though I haven't checked] that they are in all the pundits lists of teams to be relegated. And, in my opinion, they probably will be, because they haven't had the chance to establish themselves as a Championship side, let alone turn themselves into a Premiership one. And the step up to the Premier League is a biggie. I'm not talking about infrastructure here, as Norwich City have enough of that. It's about having the attitude and financial muscle, of an established Premiership club, that means they can hold their own against all opposition.

Do I care whether Norwich City succeed or fail. Not really. It's an interesting pointer for Saints though. We have three years to make it to the Prem. I wonder what Nicola Cortese would say if you asked him whether it's best we do it in one..? What do you think..?

I can see where you are coming from, you said though that Norwich haven't had a chance to establish themselves as a Championship side- despite them coming second and winning automatic promotion? They seemed to establish themselves ok to me mate! They just did it quicker than a team normally would.

A team is always going to try and finish as high as possible and push to play at the highest level. There are upsides to having an extra season of building but they should only come as compensation for not getting promoted ;)

Would rather just get promoted really. Surely by doing well early is a sign that we're already fairly well established? Besides if we went up and straight back down I would be confident we could go straight back up again.

i might be on my own here buyt i think the quicker the better and i have always felt that. I belive are team is definatly good enough for championship as it is and with a cb and mayb a striker i think we should be lookin at play-offs. I think we have a couple of players good enough for the orem already such as cork, lallana and schneiderlin has huge potential and maybe fonte. If we go up a league mr cortese will not want to go down and i think will invest a fair amount of money to bring in prem quility and areas needing strenthing. we'll probs spend around 15 mil. I think we will have a better chance staying up in prem then norwich its where we BELONG guys. Onwards and upwards. Premier league here i come

It's a pretty meaningless question. Not to strive for promotion would be to not to try and win every game. Every team tries to win every game.

If we did go straight up then bingo that is what we want only concern from a fans point of view would be the possibilty of crazy elevation on the cost of tickets but ultimatly the aim is as high as possiblefor the team and the club in general

promotion from the Champ is worth c.£90m. Added quality of the squad, team morale and other financial gains that all come with promotion - plenty there to help bridge the gap for Saints.

I don't think it's meaningless at all. Like everyone else, I'd much prefer to be promoted sooner than later [just can't resist the temptation], but I can see several valid reasons for waiting one season or even two. What I'm pondering over is whether those reasons outweigh the obvious success that being promoted at the earliest opportunity brings. I am also acutely conscious that promotions cannot be merely ordered like a restaurant meal, so you take them when they arrive.

On the purely emotional front, if it gives great, honest team players like Rickie Lambert the chance to play at least one full season in the Premiership, where if he'd been properly managed he could have spent half of his career, IMO, I say bring it on.

What do you mean, wait a season or two?? Like, deliberately concede points in case we move too far up the league and risk promotion? Baffled by this tbh.

The "take time to consolidate" and "they came up too early" comments from pundits are based on them having absolutely zero to say. Comments like this are a waste of oxygen. Even if Norwich go down, how on earth can the club not benefit? They'll be in the Champ with £50M in their bin as opposed to still being in the Champ without it!

Do I really have to go into detail to explain why it might be advantageous to spend at least one season in The Championship, rather than being promoted straight away. Can you really not see that there are plusses..?

Remember, I'd rather go straight up, but I can see the other side off this too.

There are not many teams that could stay in the Premiership without major changes to the team that got promoted, no matter how long they were in the Championship "consolidating". If they have serious ambitions about staying up there is no room for sentiment and that is an area that might not sit too well with some supporters.
Look at some of the posts on here this week about signing Danny Fox. Although widely regarded as being better that what we already have, some posters have questioned whether it is fair to Harding and Dickson. Imagine what the feelings would be if we managed promotion this season followed by a huge clearout of favourites.

That's interesting, what is it we are debating? You made a point and everyone disagreed...
