Lol well i've never grabbed a shirt and i love to win as i know that's blatant cheating.

I'm sure it might come natural because you do it so often then. I'm pretty sure thats the same as blatant diving as when i was younger there were a few who would do it. Even now i see it and we're just playing friendly matches amongst mates. We just ignore him half the time as he's a blatant diver but i can see how that might come as naturally as shirt pulling

Shirt pulling is natural cos we get used to it cos we are allowed away with it constantly.

Centre back/Right back, sometimes midfield but then again its friendly games, not part of any league. Obviously if it was in a league i'd probably cheat and pull someone back too knowing no cards ever really get dished

I played every position over the years but shirt pulling only really happen when I was in defensive positions. Was mostly leagues games.

Always got pissed off with it when in attacking positions or when playing five-a-side

Yes my point was. for anyone not playing seriously, i never saw it and don't really do it myself.

You obviously see it all the time, and you would be a muggins not to do it even though it is cheating as its not even an attempt to play the ball or using your strength (against someone else).

I guess in pro football, diving is now prevalent and people do it all the time so it's probably natural to them as you see shirt pulling is.

Shirt pulling should only be used in defence when you've been totally beaten and need to drag them back.

A lot of defenders do that when behind forward for no reason. You get touch tight and hold onto player but not hold them so that ref can give foul.

Shirt pulling can be a result of a decision made but it can also be instinctive. Diving isn't instinctive. That's the difference

For a lot of forward players it is, you're used to anticipating what the defender is going to do, so when you see someone flying towards you then you aren't going to plant your foot and risk an injury, you're going to predict the contact and go down.

Rubbish. You tried and get they're first, the try and win the ball, you try and get in a position to score a goal. You don't flop over like a 7yr girl!!!

    Ermmm, no I didn't. I said this:
I didn't say that I felt it was legitimate, I don't think it is right to endanger someone with a reckless challenge. However, it is open and easier for the officials to deal with than the sneaky stuff that we were discussing earlier.

If someone is stupid enough to dive in toward you then you have every right to win the foul, like Chelsea did against Spurs in the FA Cup.

I can understand the frustration at things like Rivaldo in the world cup, Sanchez last week etc. where its just a blatant attempt to get an opponent sent off, but I don't understand the complaint when someone thinks I'll take the contact and go down rather than plant my foot and have all of this guy's body weight crashing into my planted leg.

Have to disagree. It isn't instinctive for anyone to throw themselves to the ground unnecessarily. Diving in football is a learned behaviour. Occasionally it can be the result of trying to avoid a collision or injury, but often it is an attempt to con the officials into giving an advantage.
I think we all know that it's the latter one that we're discussing when we use the term.
